In the quiet midnight mountains, a scratching sound like wood rubbing against wood could be heard. That eerie noise sent a different kind of fear through me.

I’m sure those in the other room felt the same.

“...Kamushin. Do you think Til and Arte are asleep?”

“The noise has been going on for several minutes now. They’re probably awake...”

Kamushin answered and slowly started moving toward the entrance. The base we set up this time is a single-story building with no basement or second floor. The living room is in the center, with a bedroom on each side.

After building several bases, this layout was the easiest for resting. By the way, the base for His Majesty has a room where the royal guards stand watch, with the bedroom further inside. Both rooms are quite spacious and received good reviews.

In other words, this base is designed specifically for rest. Even if you stood on your head, it wouldn't work well as a defensive base.

Understanding this, Kamushin carefully took his time to open the bedroom door. Not making a sound at all, as expected of him. His movements were so flawless it was like watching a professional thief slipping out of the room.

Watching his retreating figure, as if on cue, a loud noise erupted from the entrance. It sounded like someone was trying to kick the door down. Kamushin’s back jumped at the thunderous sound despite his cautious approach.

“...!?”

He let out a soundless gasp and froze on the spot. Meanwhile, the sounds of the door being forcibly pried open continued.

“The lock can’t be opened, right?”

The door is bolted from the inside with a wooden block lock. It shouldn’t be easy to break.

As I was thinking this, a dark rod appeared through the gap in the door. It lifted the wooden block bolt upward.

“Huh? What’s that? That’s cheating, isn’t it?”

I couldn’t help but comment. Maybe it would have been better if the bolt slid sideways instead.

But thinking about that now wouldn’t help. Before long, the door was easily opened.

“Lord Van, please do not leave the bedroom.”

Without looking back, Kamushin said that and gripped his sword again. Perhaps he planned to strike the moment someone entered the base. He bent his knees slightly and lowered his posture. Seeing the tension in his hand gripping the sword’s hilt made me involuntarily tighten my own grip.

Just as Kamushin was about to move, a thunderous boom like an explosion echoed at the entrance. The sound reverberated inside, hurting our ears.

I wanted to understand what was happening, but I’d have to go to the entrance to see. Maybe if I got just behind Kamushin’s low posture, I could see.

As I looked at Kamushin’s face, he had an expression almost like a bitter smile. Then he turned to look at me.

“So, you were awake after all, Lady Arte.”

“Huh? Arte?”

Upon hearing Kamushin’s words, I unconsciously moved toward the entrance. Peeking outside, I saw a pair of silver knights (Aventadors) controlled by Arte lined up on either side of the entrance.

“W-what is this...!?”

A shout came from outside, followed by a loud angry voice in the distance.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing!?”

“Capture them immediately!”

Then loud sounds of fighting erupted. The clash of metal echoed clearly in the quiet night.

“Lord Van, are you all right?”

After the commotion began, Til and Arte approached cautiously, on alert. Beside Arte was a doll wearing Mithril armor, faithfully following her.

“I’m fine. Thank you.”

I replied and sheathed my twin swords. It was a feeling of both relief and sadness... right now, Arte was the most reliable of all.

“Maybe I should train a bit more too.”

I thought, wondering if I should increase training time with Dee. I muttered softly, and Kamushin nodded seriously.
