After arranging the first wave of ancient demons, Marquez once again set out to search for more of his clan members.
However, the space of the shelter was limited, accommodating a maximum of around ten thousand people at most—beyond that, the resources required would be a significant burden for Marquez.
Three thousand...
Marquez set a small target for himself.
Three thousand people would neither consume much time nor resources, and it wouldn't attract too much attention. Marquez's calculations were quite sound.
In fact, everything was just as Marquez had imagined. Once the three thousand ancient demons were placed in the shelter, everything appeared calm and undetectable.
After doing all of this, Marquez left enough supplies for the ancient demons to use for seven days, then with a flicker, he vanished.
...
Third District Forward Base.
When Marquez returned to his military position, the sky was already dark.
Yet the entire Third District Forward Base was still brightly lit—due to the attacks of demonic creatures, tonight was destined to be sleepless.
Of course, all of this had little to do with Marquez. His superiors had not assigned him more specific tasks, only telling him to go if he wanted, and to hold the line if he didn't.
A simple command.
And for Marquez, he had no desire to get involved in these trivial matters—once part of the demonic clan, he had become the commander of a human legion. Where should Marquez position himself on the battlefield?
In fact, Marquez didn't even understand it himself...
But someone did understand...
His brother understood...
...
“Marquez!”
A deep voice came from outside the door, and before Marquez could respond, the door was already pulled open.
Marquez was simply lying on his bed, turning his head to glance at the visitor, then ignoring him once more.
Rei...
Marquez's brother, someone with a fate that was the same, even intertwined.
“Get up, come outside with me.”
Rei approached Marquez's bedside and spoke to him.
Marquez maintained a lazy posture.
“Hurry up...”
Rei seemed a bit impatient, speaking quickly and sternly.
“What are we going for?”
“To kill the enemy!”
“What is the enemy?”
“The demonic clan is the enemy!”
“Pfft...”
A snicker escaped Marquez, and this simple exchange made him show a mocking expression. He completely turned over, lying on his side to look at Rei, softly laughing derisively.
“What's wrong? You actually think of yourself as human?”
Upon hearing this, Rei simply frowned and then sighed.
He sat down beside Marquez's bed, slowly speaking as if to comfort his brother.
“Marquez, the situation has changed...”
“Uh-huh, changed. You’ve become human, right?”
“No, it’s us. We have become human...”
At that moment, Rei's gaze was sincere, looking at Marquez as if he were observing a child who would never grow up...
“It’s been decades, it’s been decades... The Demon Palace hasn’t responded, nor has anyone contacted us. You should understand, our levels and strength are simply unworthy of the lord demon's attention. He gave us an order back then, and I thought long and hard, feeling it was merely an expendable move, but now, that expendable move has become a dead piece...”
“We have already been abandoned.”
Rei recognized reality, and he accepted reality.
Marquez also recognized reality...
But he did not accept reality!
At that moment, Marquez's voice was calm.
“I know we’ve been abandoned, but that doesn’t mean we can abandon our essence, throw away everything we once had. What do you want to do, Rei? I don’t care, but right now, I don’t want to do anything.”
“I don’t want to truly guard the territory like the soldiers in Beijing, nor do I want to rampage like demonic creatures, only to be taken down by stronger practitioners. I just want to quietly collect some military pay, wait until a certain time, retire, and find a desolate place to spend the rest of my life in peace—nothing more.”
Marquez spoke these words sincerely...
