Today, four chapters are posted simultaneously.
This story is the first chapter.
Three days have passed since Ms. Eleonora’s arrival. Continuing from the first day, I was busy greeting various related parties and handing over work when Mr. Sebas came to visit again.
“Regarding the ‘suspected technology theft’ I mentioned the other day, we have confirmed the details. To get straight to the point, there was no technology theft. However, it is partly true that ‘a facility modeled after Lord Ryoma’s garbage disposal site was constructed.’”
The meeting took place in the reception room prepared at the office. Except for the absence of Mr. Calm among the attendees, the situation was the same as last time.
Since there was no technology theft, it means the slime was not stolen. It seems our employees were not involved in any wrongdoing either, which is a relief. But the report did not end there.
“The cause of suspicion was a newly established garbage ‘collection site’ in the town within the territory. After directly interviewing the lord of the territory, we learned that the reason for the new site was ‘to respond to the increased damage caused by magical beasts at the existing garbage disposal facility.’
The increase of magical beasts in his territory is more significant compared to other regions. Due to confusion from the change in lordship, the extermination efforts have been insufficient. It has been confirmed that more magical beasts have been appearing at the existing waste facility located outside the town, attracted by the presence of food sources, causing an increase in harm to the workers.”
To reduce the damage, strengthening defense is necessary, which naturally involves costs. Moreover, the territory itself is not very wealthy, and the payment of fines for crimes committed by the previous lord is also a burden. Doing nothing will not solve the problem, and the damage will only worsen.
As a last resort, two measures were taken: suspending operations at the existing disposal facility and setting up a temporary collection site in the town. Although it feels like postponing the problem and raises various concerns such as hygiene, concentrating defensive forces in the town by relocating the collection point is one way to handle it.
In Gimul Town as well, the traditional garbage disposal site is still outside the town, with people still working there. Since the slime-based garbage disposal is working well now, I think we could handle a similar situation if it occurred... but it’s a troublesome issue if such systems are absent.
“We have also verified the reasons for establishing the collection site and the state of the territory, so it’s deemed not to be a mere excuse.”
“…I get the feeling there’s some nuance in the phrase ‘not a lie,’ though.”
“Your insight is sharp. The root of the problem lies in the relationship between the lord and the neighboring nobles. Apparently, after taking office, the new lord’s relationship with surrounding nobles is worse than we initially imagined.
The magical beast problem causing the establishment of the collection site affects not only garbage disposal but also distribution and other areas. Although the lord first acknowledged the previous lord’s mistakes and his own shortcomings and sought help, he was flatly refused.
Afterwards, when he desperately wanted assistance, demands began surfacing that took advantage of his weak position.”
“That sounds like even if the magical beast problem is solved, other issues will arise…”
“The new lord’s position is overwhelmingly weak, so some opportunists must have taken advantage of that.”
Mr. Eudam nodded in agreement with my words, looking exasperated.
“If the territories are adjacent, simply saying ‘I’m too busy protecting my own territory’ can buy some time. Eventually, they’ll come crying for help, and then better terms can be negotiated. That’s probably what the other side is thinking. It’s the people who suffer—the common folk...
