Chapter 21: To Do a Better Job đź’Ş

Published: July 31, 2025

This time, five chapters are updated simultaneously.

This story is the third chapter.

I laid out the items I bought in the city inside a room at the inn and began working.

First, I applied the sticky slime’s adhesive liquid to the surface of the fabric I had purchased, then dried it using a magic called "Dryer," which combines the basic wind magic "Breeze," which blows air, and the basic fire magic "Fire." This allowed me to mass-produce waterproof fabric.

In the past, when I once lost control of the "Dryer" spell, the fire received the breeze wind and produced a fiercely erupting flame. That, in itself, became an attack magic called "Flamethrower," which can shoot a stream of fire. But if that happened here, it wouldn’t be funny at all.

Being careful took me until early afternoon just to finish this step. It would be easier if the attributes were the same, but combining magic with different attributes is tough to control… Well, it’s no use complaining about that now.

Next, I had the sticky slime spin threads, which I wound onto spools. The strength of sticky slime threads changes depending on the ratio of adhesive liquid to hardening liquid, so I asked it to adjust the ratio according to their intended use, making the threads easier to handle.

For example, if the ratio of adhesive to hardening liquid is 7:3, the thread is soft and suitable for neat sewing; 6:4 makes strong thread; 5:5 produces flexible thread that can be used for traps and will break if caught by a person or beast; and 4:6 creates thread strong enough to strangle humans or animals.

When I tested the thread’s strength in the forest, I stretched several 4:6 threads between trees and lured a black bear. The threads withstood the bear’s collision once, but left small cuts on the bear’s body.

At that time, I thought this could be a very dangerous trap depending on how it was used, so I hurriedly sealed it away. Since then, I hardly use it except when monsters like goblins appear in large numbers.

The only exception is using it as guitar strings I made from forest wood, which somehow reminded me of my past life. Although strong, the thread wasn’t sharp enough to cut fingers on touch, so I believe there are safe uses to be found.

Doing such simple work brings back memories… And now I finished winding the 6:4 thread. Next was cutting the waterproof cloth. I carefully cut it into several parts.

What I want to make are work clothes similar to the jumpsuit from my previous life and a kind of rubber boots with overalls. Since I’ll be cleaning pit latrines from tomorrow, even if I leave most cleaning tasks to scavenger slimes and can keep clean with cleaner slimes, I don’t want to go in my everyday clothes. If I can prepare beforehand, I should.

Just as I finished making the makeshift overalls, someone knocked on the door.

"Lord Ryoma, I heard you have returned. Are you there?"

It was Mr. Sebas, so I quickly opened the door.

"I'm here."

"Were there any problems?"

"None in particular."

"I see. I asked the inn staff, and they said you left this morning, returned before noon, and since then have been holed up in your room without coming out even for lunch..."

Ah, I hadn’t eaten lunch.

"Sorry, I got a bit absorbed in my work... Did I worry you?"

"If you don’t mind, please show yourself to everyone, especially the young lady and madam. If you’re doing sewing work, you can do it in their rooms, and I can have two maids help you."

Since I was planning to go talk anyway, this was convenient. I tossed my tools and fabric into the Item Box and, taking the slimes with me, headed to the Duke’s household room.

When I arrived with Mr. Sebas, the madam and young lady immediately rushed over.

"Are you safe!? Did something happen!?"

"Ryoma-kun! Are you okay? Any injuries?"

"Now, now, both of you calm down."

Mr. Reinhardt and Lord Reinbach’s words made them step back.

"Well... I’m sorry to have caused you worry. Nothing serious happened. I just got caught up in my work and forgot to eat."
