Chapter 680: Guarding the Homeland

Vigan is a dark mage who has lived in Demon City for as long as he can remember. He is not a member of the Karlqi Family and has no connections with them at all. However, he should not be underestimated; in fact, his ancestors were once quite illustrious. Over a thousand years ago, one of his ancestors was a grand mage of an empire, and their family even held a duke's title.

Unfortunately, the empire they were loyal to was eventually destroyed by the Leon Empire. His family’s ancestors were too devoted to that empire, resulting in the Leon Empire finding a reason to revoke their title and subjecting them to various forms of oppression. Ultimately, his family had no choice but to settle in Demon City.

Every empire has its strongholds, places where its power is concentrated. For instance, the small formation at the foot of Aklaya Mountain belongs to the Leon Empire, and Demon City is a stronghold of the Pagoda Empire. This region is particularly suitable for dark mages to thrive, hence Vigan's family settled there. Despite being within the Pagoda Empire's territory, the empire's power here is quite weak, allowing his family to establish a stable presence.

However, it is unfortunate that Demon City isn’t entirely safe. Hundreds of years ago, there was a large-scale breakout of dark beings and undead beings from the Demon Abyss that attacked the city, nearly breaching its defenses. Although the city ultimately held its ground, the losses among the dark mages and adventurers were severe, and it was the Vigan Family that suffered the most. Over time, what was once a powerful force in Demon City began to decline.

Currently, there are only a dozen dark mages left in the Vigan Family. Despite this, no mercenary group or other forces in Demon City would dare to underestimate them. The dark magic passed down in the Vigan Family is genuinely powerful, and importantly, they have always regarded Demon City as their home. This has granted them a high status in the city, earning respect from mercenary groups and other powers. In times of conflict, they often invite the Vigan Family to mediate.

Vigan is just an ordinary mage in the family; he is neither the family head nor the heir. The Pagoda Empire has already informed them about the impending events in the Demon Abyss. The empire is gathering troops in Demon City and has asked the Vigan Family to help persuade the mercenary groups, adventurers, and other dark mage forces to stay and protect the city.

The Vigan Family did not disappoint the Pagoda Empire. They actively persuaded various mercenary groups and adventurers, ensuring that most forces in Demon City remained. Moreover, the Vigan Family dispatched their mages to help the troops patrol the city walls. Dark mages are particularly sensitive to dark energy, so their presence alleviated some of the burden on the military.

Demon City’s geography is quite peculiar; the entire city was built to guard against the Demon Abyss. The terrain surrounding the abyss—an immense chasm whose depths remain unknown—has claimed the lives of all who sought to explore it.

How vast is the Demon Abyss? It is indeed impressive. The abyss resembles a massive fissure stretching thousands of miles, with its widest point exceeding two thousand miles. Except for the gently sloping area leading to the surface at Demon City, the rest of it consists of cliffs that magical beasts can hardly ascend. Furthermore, the abyss is perpetually shrouded in black mist, making it impossible to discern what lies within.

This unique situation is precisely why Demon City exists. Perhaps, it is one of the oldest cities on the continent. Since the day the Demon Abyss appeared, Demon City has likely been around. It has been so long that no one can remember. Regardless of the wars that have ravaged the continent, almost no one dares to approach Demon City, as it is defended not by regular troops but by mercenary groups, adventurers, and dark mages—people who seem to exist on the fringes of society while vigilantly guarding the abyss. These individuals live off the abyss while simultaneously protecting it, leading to a complex relationship with the people of the continent.
