Chapter 36: The Overwhelming Magical Beasts
Zhao Hai thought that these slaves had never been to school, so he expected it would be difficult for them to line up. However, to his surprise, as soon as he gave the command, the female slaves quickly formed two neat lines, no less organized than what Zhao Hai had seen during his time at school.
Meanwhile, Lin stood alone off to the side. Zhao Hai glanced at Lin and understood that it was because he was the only male slave in the castle, so he stood there by himself.
The speed at which the slaves lined up exceeded Zhao Hai's expectations, leaving him momentarily stunned as he looked at them in confusion.
What Zhao Hai did not realize was that these slaves had been trained to line up from a young age. Standing in formation had become almost instinctual for them.
While the slaves did not count themselves every day, whenever they went out to work or returned, they had to line up for a count to prevent anyone from sneaking away.
Unaware of this, Zhao Hai was taken aback by how quickly they assembled, but he soon snapped back to reality. He knew he didnât have time to ponder, so he immediately said, âCount off.â
This command came out instinctively, and the slaves promptly began to count off. The final number was thirty-four, meaning there were thirty-four female slaves and one male slave in the yard.
Zhao Hai nodded and said loudly, âLin just reported that a large number of magical beasts and undead beings are heading towards the castle from the Corpse Swamp. A battle may happen shortly, so you all stay here and donât wander off.â
Fear surfaced on the faces of the female slaves. If it were a human army attacking, they wouldnât be afraid. As long as they did not resist, the attackers generally wouldnât harm slaves because they could be sold for money. So, as long as they complied, they were mostly safe.
However, this time it was magical beasts and undead beings. For these two kinds of creatures, gold coins held no value. To them, there was no distinction between nobles and slaves; a human was simply a human, regardless of status.
At that moment, several more slaves approached from outside, also female, with Ju among them. Zhao Hai had them count off again, and including Ju, they totaled fifty, meaning all the female slaves had returned.
When Zhao Hai saw Ju leading the female slaves back, he realized Meg might have returned as well, but had not entered the Inner Fortress; she was likely preparing to assist Mu and the others.
Zhao Hai did not go to the Outer Fortress; he knew that if he went there now, he would only cause confusion for Merlin and the others. It was better to wait here.
He glanced at the slaves and turned to Ju, saying, âJu, keep an eye on them and donât let them run around.â Then he addressed the slaves, âI need to go inside to get something. You must listen to Ju and stay put.â
With that, Zhao Hai hurried into the castle. There was an underground warehouse there that he had previously inspected, where all the supplies bought by Galen were stored. Now, he planned to move those supplies into his space to prevent them from being spoiled by the magical beasts or undead beings.
The underground warehouse was indeed large. It took Zhao Hai quite a while to gather all the items. After that, he ran upstairs, where there were still many things left, primarily the books in the study.
Zhao Hai also noticed that Galen seemed to have bought those books with the intention of training the slaves; otherwise, he wouldnât have purchased so many on magic and fighting spirit enlightenment. Those books were very important, not only serving as a key for Zhao Hai to understand this world but also as a teaching resource for the budah family to cultivate talent.
Zhao Hai quickly made it upstairs and stored all the items from the study into his space, including the desks and chairs since the spaceâs warehouse was not limited in capacity, so he packed them all in.
He didnât gather the bedding and similar items right away. Galen had bought plenty of those, possibly because the weather was warming up, and he hadnât taken them out for the slaves to use, so they had piled up in the warehouse.
