Chapter 27: Five Thousand Jin a Day

While Zhao Hai was worried about the weapon situation, a sudden voice interrupted him, saying, “The corn has matured; please harvest it as soon as possible.”

Zhao Hai was taken aback for a moment, but quickly regained his composure. He glanced at Merlin and said, “Grandma Merlin, the corn I planted is ready. I want to go harvest it in the space. Would you like to come?”

Since he had already brought Merlin to the space before, it didn’t matter to him. However, Merlin wasn't just any object; he respected her greatly. Even if he was going to the space, he would still seek her opinion first.

Upon hearing Zhao Hai’s words, Merlin was curious and wanted to see Zhao Hai’s space. She nodded and replied, “Sure, young master, I’d like to see the space too.” Zhao Hai nodded, and with a thought, the two of them appeared in the space.

In the space, the radishes, which had been planted only that morning, had just started to sprout small leaves, but the corn was already fully matured.

The way the corn matured in the space was different from what Zhao Hai had seen in the game. In the game, the corn appeared green even when matured, but in the space, the leaves of the corn dried out as it matured. The corn stalks were very sturdy, with large cobs nearly fifty centimeters long, and the kernels had burst through their husks, glistening in a golden-yellow hue that was quite appetizing.

Merlin had obviously never seen corn before and didn’t know what to do. She just curiously looked at the corn, unsure of how to start.

Overjoyed, Zhao Hai walked over to the corn patch, picked a large cob, peeled off the husk, and revealed the plump kernels. It looked like the yield would be substantial. Based on this yield, the two acres could produce at least five thousand jin of corn, which would be enough to plant a thousand acres if used as seeds.

Excitedly, Zhao Hai handed the cob to Merlin with a smile and said, “Grandma Merlin, look, this is corn! With a simple processing, it can be used as food. Although it's not very tasty, it can fill us up. This two acres of corn can yield over five thousand jin, and if we use it all as seeds, it can plant a thousand acres. From now on, we can harvest every day, so we won’t have to worry about food.”

Merlin took the corn cob but stared at Zhao Hai, asking, “Young master, are you saying we can harvest over five thousand jin of food every day?”

Zhao Hai smiled and nodded. He understood Merlin’s line of thought. For over a hundred people, five thousand jin might not seem like much, but the prospect of harvesting that amount every day was quite terrifying. Moreover, the corn matured in the space in about fourteen hours, so collecting over five thousand jin daily was an understatement.

Seeing Zhao Hai’s expression, Merlin’s face flushed with excitement, and she kept repeating, “Five thousand jin a day, five thousand jin a day.”

Zhao Hai chuckled and said, “Alright, Grandma Merlin, corn isn’t that delicious. We’ll still grow other things in the future. This is just a transitional period, so we can only grow this for now.”

Merlin snapped back to her senses and quickly replied, “No, young master, let’s just grow this! This is what I’ve heard has the highest yield. Young master, we should just grow this!”

Zhao Hai laughed, “Alright, we’ll just grow this. But Grandma Merlin, don’t get too excited. Hehe, there are many high-yield crops. Although they might not yield as much as corn, they taste better. You don’t need to worry; I have a plan.”

When Merlin heard this, she nodded in agreement and said, “That’s good. Young master, let’s get to harvesting. We still need to thresh this grain, right?”

Zhao Hai smiled and said, “It’s fine. In this space, I’m in charge.” He then said solemnly, “Harvest the corn and separate the corn kernels, stalks, and cobs.”

The term “cob” is actually a more refined term; in Zhao Hai’s hometown, corn is called “bao mi,” and the cob is referred to as “bao mi zi,” which is also good for burning.
