Chapter 122: Unfathomable
Laura and the others sat in the carriage, while Ser and the others followed alongside as usual. They had already exited Rubble Mountain, but Laura and her group did not speak.
After a while, Laura opened the windows on both sides of the carriage and asked Ser, "Ser, have you eaten?"
Ser was taken aback; he was surprised by Laura's concern. Although he was the head of Laura's guards, she had never shown interest in whether he had eaten before. However, since she asked, he couldn’t ignore her. He quickly nodded and replied, "Yes, Miss, we have already eaten."
Laura immediately asked, "What did you eat?"
Ser felt even more puzzled but answered, "The food was delivered by Mr. Zhao Hai's undead beings. There were large flatbreads, rabbit meat, and several types of vegetables, but I had never seen them before."
Laura continued, "How did it taste?"
Ser nodded and replied, "It was very delicious, and all the vegetables and meat they brought seemed to be magical vegetables with strong magical power, even stronger than regular vegetables. One dish seemed to be magic radish, which was several times better than the magic radish at our restaurant."
Laura nodded, closed the window, and turned to Kun Zheng, saying, "Grandpa Kun Zheng, what do you think?"
Kun Zheng looked at Laura and said, "Unfathomable. Zhao Hai must have a powerful force behind him; he should be a representative of this force. But what puzzles me is which major power on the continent would need to resort to such means to extract money? Generally, the goods produced by those major powers have their own sales networks, so it shouldn't be our turn. Could it be specifically targeting us?"
After saying this, Kun Zheng shook his head, negating his own speculation. "That's impossible. Our only enemies right now are those heirs in the Magedel family, but we can't really be considered their true enemies. After all, our current situation is too small to pose any threat to the other members of the Magedel family. They wouldn't send people to scheme against us like this. Furthermore, the Magedel family has never been able to obtain firefly fish, while Zhao Hai has a large supply of them, so clearly, he can't be our enemy specifically trying to deal with us. We aren't worth such effort."
Laura nodded and said, "Yes, from Mr. Zhao Hai's words, we can tell he seems to have quite a bit of territory. This territory produces a large quantity of nut oil, can raise fish, run ranches, and even produce firefly fish. I really can't think of anyone on the continent who possesses such land. Even if someone did, it should have been occupied long ago. Why would Zhao Hai consider cooperating with us?"
Kun Zheng frowned and said, "It’s really hard to say. He claims to have extensive research on plants, and he doesn't seem to be lying. If he didn't have any knowledge of plants, he wouldn't be able to produce such quality magic radishes, nor those unfamiliar vegetables. Also, did you notice during the meal that they didn’t eat too much of the firefly fish? Even the servants were the same. Clearly, to them, firefly fish are not something rare. Moreover, the Blue-eyed Rabbit they ate contained magical power several times that of a regular Blue-eyed Rabbit. As far as I know, there's only one way to raise such Blue-eyed Rabbits, which is by feeding them magical vegetables, specifically high-grade magical vegetables. This indicates that he must have quite a significant territory, and within that territory, he also produces magical vegetables. His earlier purchase of Blue-eyed Rabbits from Casa City was likely for breeding purposes."
Laura nodded and said, "I suggested he form an alliance with the Magedel family, but he refused, wanting only to ally with us. It doesn’t seem like he’s targeting the Magedel family or us, yet his background is so mysterious. It's strange; powerful dark mages on the continent should be well-known figures, yet I’ve never heard of him before. Oddly enough, the warrior by his side seems to have a high rank, and that maid mage doesn’t seem low-level either. Plus, he can even transform a light mage into a high-ranking undead being. He has too many secrets."
