âI am aware of its existence.â
Threaded legendâthis is a device made by preparing two containers just big enough to cover oneâs ears, connected by a taut thread. When the thread is stretched tight, words spoken into one container are transmitted to the container held against the other ear.
It is said to have originated from someone who once listened to distant sounds by pressing their ear to the ground.
âStarting from that idea, we tried many variations. To transmit over long distances, we needed a very long threadâinevitably turning into a ropeâand experimented with that.â
âSo you mean transmitting messages using ropes?â
âExactly. At first, we tried to transmit sound, but it didnât work well. Then we tried movements, twists, and so on, but none succeeded.â
âHeat transmission wouldnât work either, I suppose?â
âImpressive, Noah. It was only after about half a year of experimenting with the threaded legend that I came up with this.â
âSince Father tried that much, does that mean it was ultimately useless?â
âYes. There were two issues. First, the longer the thread, the harder it was for the message to be conveyedâit was easily affected along the way. For example, if you pinch the thread somewhere, the message wouldnât pass beyond that point.â
âCompletely unsuitable for long distances.â
âThatâs right. Even if it got through somehow, the message became ambiguous. I thought the method had to be clear and definite, like black or white, to be practical.â
âBlack or white⌠ah!â
âWhatâs wrong?â
â...Excuse me, Your Majesty.â
Father nodded.
Then he looked at me with a face that said, âWhat are you doing?â
I raised my hand.
I mixed the power of Fuwawa with the ring I always wear on my thumb to create a thread.
To make it âeasy to understand,â I made the thread about the thickness of a little finger, and about the length from elbow to fingertip.
âWhat will you do with that?â
âLike this.â
I said so and commanded Fuwawa.
Instantly, the thread I made white turned pitch black.
âWhoa!â
Father exclaimed, impressed.
âI see. That can be transmitted clearly.â
âYes. Black or white, that leaves no room for ambiguity. The content can alsoââ
âIf we prepare a cipher chart in advance, right? Combinations of black and whiteâif itâs the sound of words, about 20 patterns would suffice to form basic sentences.â
âYes.â
âWonderful, Noah. That was ultimately my goal, but I couldnât find a way to achieve it.â
While being praised by Father, I stared at the thread of Fuwawa.
The good thing about this is that the power of Fuwawa, once released from my hand, can be used by others to some extent.
Even now, Fuwawaâs Box is designed so only the person itâs given to can unlock it.
Compared to that, switching between two colors, black and white, is a trivial matter.
âbut, however.
My excitement lasted only a moment before I immediately found a problem.
I ordered Fuwawa to âstretchâ the thread as much as possible.
The thread became thinner and longerâuntil it snapped after going around Fatherâs and the retired emperorâs spacious bedrooms once.
âHmm...â
Frowning, I groaned.
While going around such a large bedroom once is long for a thread, itâs nowhere near enough for the ultra-long distances we wantedâto be used between bases.
âThatâs it.â
âHuh?â
âI said there are two problems, right? The other one is fundamental: we couldnât make something long enough to connect city to city.â
âYesâŚâ
I nodded heavily.
As expected of Father, he had also faced this problem.
But out of the two problems, one has been solved.
Moreover, I devised the best possible solutionâmaking it black or white, clear and definite.
I want to push this toward practical use, which means making it longer.
âIn that caseââ
ââ!â
I suddenly looked away.
Startled by a voice I barely heard, I quickly realized.
This had happened before.
Many times before.
âYou want my power?â
ââŚYes, I do.â
