In the darkness, a man was hiding in the shadows.
The black attire he wore would have stood out during the day, but at night, it blended perfectly with the background.
Combined with his skill, he was so well concealed that unless someone stared at him from close range, he would not be discovered.
The man was keenly aware of erasing his presence, listening intently to every sound coming from the tent before him.
“As expected of Your Majesty, you sure can drink. Come on, drink more.”
“Ahahaha, this time, Alice, you should be the one to give me a drink.”
“Oh, Your Majesty, please don’t touch strange places.”
“No harm done, no harm done.”
“Stop it! Not yet.”
“I see, ‘not yet,’ huh? Ahahahaha. Alright, I’ll show you something good.”
“Something good?”
What came from beyond the tent was exactly as the prior intel had stated.
The emperor of the empire had brought his favored concubine to the battlefield and was indulging in debauchery.
It’s not entirely unheard of for those in power to bring women even to the battlefield, but due to his line of work, the man refrained from making assumptions until he confirmed it himself.
Now, hearing the raucous revelry beyond the tent, he became certain.
Though his sharp senses hadn’t detected any intimate encounter yet, he chalked that up to the overpowering smell of strong alcohol invading his nostrils.
This strong scent of alcohol was so potent it carried even through the tent — the man was fully convinced of the emperor’s lavish debauchery and felt his mission was half accomplished.
“…Alright.”
Having gotten the confirmation,
the man decided it was time to leave.
He had been a scout for many years.
His top priority was to survive and bring back information.
So, he took his time.
He took a great deal of time to “return.”
He carefully observed the patrolling soldiers, waiting for a safe and certain opportunity to escape.
Eventually, a gap appeared.
Seizing that gap, the man slipped out of the Empire's army camp and vanished into the dark grasslands.
...
...
...
Two men were silently watching that figure from the shadows.
☆
“They left.”
“Mm.”
After confirming the enemy scout had departed, Henry and I emerged from our hiding place.
“Finally, they came.”
“Yes. Combined with the information we spread, there’s no doubt they will conclude that Your Majesty is a tyrant.”
“Mm.”
The main reason I brought Alice here was to deceive the enemy and make them careless.
We had disseminated information both directly and indirectly, but we expected the opposing commander, if they were competent, to send scouts to verify it.
Tonight, the scout we’d been waiting for arrived, and successfully returned with news of my ‘debauchery.’
That meant the first stage was cleared.
“Good thing you had no prior acquaintance with Eiler Noof.”
“The Noof family is a mere sideline branch, after all.”
“Mm.”
“But—”
“Hmm? What is it?”
I glanced to the side and saw Henry looking at me.
He had a face like he had tasted something bitter but was somewhat impressed at the same time.
“Your Majesty’s Majestic Deed—I never thought it could be used like this.”
“It’s just a small adaptation.”
I smiled lightly.
Henry was referring to the presence diversion technique.
I had diverted the gaze of everyone in the direction the scout was escaping.
The scout, being extremely cautious, escaped precisely in the moment when the gazes were diverted.
Thanks to my support, the scout got away safely.
Of course, it was obvious at a glance that the scout’s skill in erasing presence and footsteps, as well as infiltration and escape techniques, was exceptional; even without my help, they probably could have managed.
Still, I supported them just to be absolutely sure.
“That it could be used for others as well.”
“The technique is originally about guiding the gaze of others, so whether it’s me or someone else is not a prerequisite.”
“Indeed, it’s amazing... There seem to be many other possible applications.”
