Afternoon at the Oscar Residence.
Oscar was admiring the flower beds in the garden when a servant came running up to him and whispered in his ear.
"That's unusual. Show him in immediately."
"Yes!"
Oscar was a little surprised.
After saying that to the servant, the servant dashed off, retracing his steps.
A few minutes later, he returned, this time accompanied by Henry.
Oscar wore a kindly smile and spread his arms wide, walking toward Henry.
"This is rare—how many years has it been since my older brother last visited my home?"
"Has it really been that long since I last came?"
"Indeed! The last time you visited, this flower bed wasn't even here yet."
Oscar stepped aside slightly, gesturing for Henry to look at the flower bed behind him.
"I see. Well, I happened to come across some fine wine, so I thought I'd share it with you."
Henry said this, raising his right hand.
In it was an old, weathered jar tied with a rope.
The jar and its sealed opening were worn with age, clearly showing it contained a rare, aged wine.
"Wonderful! Then let's set up a gathering right away."
Oscar said this, calling the servant who had accompanied Henry over to his side and whispering instructions.
Every time Oscar spoke, the servant nodded and silently counted the orders on his fingers, committing them to memory.
"Immediately, understood?"
"Yes!"
"Then go."
"Also, take this with you. If you break it, I'll kick your backside."
Henry joked as he pressed the jar filled with wine into the servant's hands.
The servant hurriedly accepted it, carefully retreating so as not to break the jar.
After seeing them off, Henry and Oscar—the two brothers—faced each other once again.
"Well, older brother, why don't we take a walk while we wait for preparations to be ready?"
"That's a good idea. By the way, I heard a rumor that your garden has a splendid 'married couple tree.' I'd like to see it for myself."
"Haha, older brother, you have a sharp wit. Our married couple tree is just for show."
Oscar said this, gesturing with his palm facing up in a 'please follow me' manner as he led Henry forward.
The "married couple tree" is a common horticultural creation.
Two trees planted side by side are bent little by little every day from a young age, growing intertwined like a spiral.
Over the years, it has been known by various names, but in recent decades, the term "married couple tree" has become the norm.
Because it requires time and effort, nobles commission and keep them to flaunt their wealth and leisure; it's become a trend.
"Impressive!"
After walking a bit, the two came before a pair of married couple trees.
"This is magnificent!"
Henry exclaimed loudly in admiration.
"Oh, it's nothing special, older brother."
"No, no—the craftsmanship of the trees is excellent, but more so is the process leading up to this."
"The process?"
"Yes, the garden. While the path reveals glimpses through the trees bit by bit, it frustrates you by not allowing you to see the whole picture—this whole effect is your idea, Oscar, isn't it?"
"Haha, you've got me. When you see right through it, I have nothing to boast about."
Oscar said this with a wry smile but seemed pleased nonetheless.
The brothers walked side by side to the married couple trees and stopped.
"You really have skill."
"What do you mean?"
"Even with these married couple trees... if it were me, I'd place them prominently where they can be seen easily, but you don't—you keep them deep inside the garden."
"I think that's different. I always envy your boldness, older brother. With these trees, I sometimes think maybe something is wrong with them, so I hide them because I lack confidence."
"But if that's the case, then it's not a mistake. A trump card is played when the chance to win appears—you won't lose. And if you don't play it, you also can't lose."
"Maybe you won't lose, but you won't win either. I often reflect that you have to try first before you get any result."
Henry and Oscar shared a glance at the married couple trees, exchanging a light exchange.
It was like feints in swordsmanship.
