Our eyes met. I watched the black-clad boy as he used presence concealment and slipped away. It seemed none of his companions noticed him; even when he passed right in front of them, they didn’t follow him with their eyes.

I can only see with one eye. It was just a chance glance, but he looked like an interesting boy.

“Zeal-kun, I’ll leave this spot to you. For training content, you can cut it down to about one-fifth of what we normally do.”

“Eh, commander!?”

Leaving everything to Vice Captain Zeal, I followed the boy. Someday Zeal-kun might go bald from stress. Well, if he does, I’ll give him a vacation.

If my hunch is right, his presence concealment skill level is high but his presence detection skill level isn’t. Then again, his presence concealment might be so high it’s practically invincible...

“Hey, where do you think you’re going?”

I stepped around in front of him and revealed myself. The boy stopped in surprise. A sharp wariness flashed in his eyes. I see—this might be how he differs from the others.

“Surprised, huh. Can you actually see me?” he asked, truly astonished. His reaction was age-appropriate and I felt a little relieved. He had seemed unusually mature; if he’d just ignored me, I would’ve been worried.

“You’re probably the only one who noticed. I have slightly unusual eyes,” I said, tapping my right eye. My right eye clearly made out his figure.

The boy resignedly raised both hands.

“I see, so there are people with Demon Eye in this world. …Um, Commander Saran, right? Do what you like with me—boil me, roast me, whatever.”

I was a little surprised. I hadn’t expected anyone to know about Demon Eye. I’d heard there was no magic in their world. So how did they know about Demon Eye?

My Demon Eye evolved from a wound in my right eye when I fought the demon king long ago. It started showing me things that the normal eye doesn’t. I realized it sees changes in animal body temperature as colors because the colors of the troop members changed noticeably before and after training. Before training they showed bluish tones; as training raised their body temperature, their colors shifted toward red. Other innate Demon Eye holders can see far distances or discern value by light and color. Mine is a modest sort. Still, it can reveal most stealth-type concealment skills. Demon Eye is treated as an extra skill; ordinary skills are fine. Even an Assassin’s concealment is usually a normal skill, so he wasn’t an exception.

“Boiling and roasting sound violent. Let’s have a gentler conversation, shall we?”

This boy is very intriguing. Putting aside the unfair advantage of my Demon Eye, his technique for naturally activating skills to slip past the trained members’ vision is remarkable—especially considering he came from a world without magic and was taught by no one.

In any case, I’ll likely be tied to him from now on. Being friendly won’t hurt.

“Where were you planning to go? I’m not telling you to return to training—just tell me.”

True to his earlier resignation, the boy answered honestly. He wanted to go to the library. If I recall, the heroes are banned from entering it. The king and others can be harsh. Right now, the most important thing for these kids should be information.

“What do you want to know?”

He told me he wanted to know the common knowledge of this world.

I smiled more deeply. Of course—these are people brought from another world and are ignorant of this one. It’s inevitable they’d want to know. It’s actually stranger that the others complied with the library ban so readily.

This boy really is different from the others.

“Hm… What’s your presence concealment skill level?”

“MAX. I don’t know what the highest possible level is, but my status says MAX.”

MAX, huh. Skill level caps are Lv.10; beyond that it just shows MAX, and you can’t tell how much higher or whether it’s improving. Even I have my combat skill, swordsmanship, only at Lv.9 as my highest. Among those I know, he’s only the second person whose skill reached MAX.
