My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's

"First, I'll talk about the first generation divine child I mentioned earlier. According to one account, the first divine child was said to be the daughter of Divine Aitel, and as I said before, she supposedly possessed powers that modern divine children no longer have."

"Eh!?"

I was already bracing myself for new information, but I couldn't help blurting out.

I clapped a hand over my mouth and gestured for her to continue.

"To start with, prophecy. There have been more than ten prophecies made, and almost all of them came true without a single miss. And the final remaining one is the prophecy I mentioned earlier — probably the one concerning Lord Akira and his group."

A string of prophecies that never failed is astonishing. If the first divine child really was Aitel's daughter, then those prophecies might as well be divine revelations or oracles.

But why hadn't the Elf race heard any credible stories about the first divine child? After all, ever since they learned I was a divine child, they’d been collecting information from places like Yamato Country.

"Next is star-reading. That's used to learn the near future. They probably read the stars literally, but that technique is entirely unknown... because the divine child's powers have been monopolized by a certain family for generations."

Amaryllis spat out the last words with a look of disgust.

It was rare to see Amaryllis show so much negativity — she’s usually so even-tempered. I wondered what that family had done to her.

"You mean the family that has produced divine children generation after generation?"

"Yes. The Kaminari family has passed down the role of divine child from the first generation through to the previous divine child. They no longer do so because the current heirs aren't divine children… I don't like to say this when Lady Amelia hasn't met them, but the Kaminari are extremely secretive. Because they hoarded the first divine child's prophecies for a long time, disasters that could have been avoided struck and many people died. Rumors spread that those events had been prophesied, and the Kaminari, facing fierce criticism, finally reluctantly made the prophecies public — which is how I learned their contents."

Amaryllis answered my question with visible discomfort.

I heard that some of Amaryllis's relatives had died in that disaster. If the Kaminari had shared the prophecy, those relatives might have been saved — I can see why she would resent them, and even if unrelated, the impression is terrible.

Kaminari, huh. That name sounded familiar somehow.

"Maybe that family was taught they mustn't avoid the prophecies! Well, the future is not normally knowable, so perhaps someone who knows the future must accept the burden and role that comes with it!"

Lattice Nail puffed up, proud of his own idea, and Amaryllis blinked rapidly at him, looking as if struck by a bolt from the blue.

"...We hadn't considered that. A distant relative of the Kaminari was also among the disaster victims, and there may be traditions or teachings within the Kaminari that I simply don't know of. …Even so, hiding prophecies that could have saved many lives is hardly praiseworthy. From the outside, it looked like they kept silent in order to ensure the prophecies came true."

Amaryllis seemed briefly convinced, but as she spoke she returned to a sullen expression.

"Ahem. Putting the first generation aside, divine children of old could do many things, but modern divine children have scarcely inherited those powers. Techniques like star-reading — things that could technically be done by non-divine children — were monopolized by the Kaminari family and kept from the outside. So the information I have about the divine child role may not be entirely accurate; please consider how this might apply to the current Lady Amelia."

With that caveat, Amaryllis began to explain the modern divine child.

"First, and this might be known on other continents: a divine child's wishes are mostly granted. If you want to be rich, a business might suddenly succeed, or you might marry into wealth. Of course, cute wishes like wanting to be united with the person you love can come true too. From what I know, it's even possible to make someone fall in love with you. In other words, they can change a person's heart."
