I couldn’t help but feel moved as I looked up at the towering castle. It was hard to believe that this magnificent fortress was the home of His Majesty, who seemed more like a wild man running through fields wielding a sword, and the prime minister, whose slyness seemed to seep from his very face. Ah, but Aperta didn’t actually live here, did he?
“…Are you thinking something rude?”
“N-no, nothing like that…”
Under the sharp scrutiny of His Majesty, whose instincts were like those of a wild beast, I respectfully answered, “That’s not the case.”
But truly, it was an impressive castle. While the many spires were imposing, it was the heavy, stately presence of the royal castle itself that was overwhelmingly dominant. By the way, Panamera’s castle was supposed to have a more intricate design, but it couldn’t match this solid sense of grandeur. The size was one factor, but above all, it was the air of history that the castle exuded.
After all, architectural works are best when they convey a sense of history, weight, and atmosphere. Different eras produce designs ranging from rounded shapes to those so simple they verge on rough. Personally, I prefer the richly decorated, lavish constructions built during a period’s heyday, but I believe each style carries its own historic charm.
“…Still, it truly is a magnificent castle.”
I voiced my honest impression, and His Majesty and Aperta exchanged glances. Panamera blinked behind them.
“Hmm, I’m glad you say so, but Viscount Van, wouldn’t you be able to build an even stronger, more solid castle? Since you’ve come all the way to the capital city, I was thinking of having you make some improvements to the royal castle.”
“No! To alter such a beautifully atmospheric castle would be presumptuous! Let this castle remain as it is! This is its perfected form!”
It seemed that His Majesty had intended to request something outrageous. Rarely had I seen him so firmly opposed, clearly stating that such an act would be unforgivable. Please understand this earnest plea.
Perhaps because of my sincere objection, His Majesty nodded several times, finally accepting my opinion.
“Is that so? Well, if Viscount Van, who is skilled at castle-building, says so, perhaps you are right.”
He murmured this, looking up once again at the castle he called home. I hoped he would come to cherish this majestic building. But just then, Aperta turned to His Majesty with a mischievous expression.
“…Your Majesty. Is it possible that Viscount Van is lying because he doesn’t want to improve the castle?”
“W-what?”
At Aperta’s words, His Majesty’s expression shifted to shock and he turned to face me.
“That’s a misunderstanding, Aperta-sama. Truly, a complete misunderstanding. It’s a magnificent misinterpretation that could be shown anywhere without shame.”
I openly conveyed my disapproval to His Majesty. Seeing this, Aperta quickly bowed his head.
“…It seems it is true. I apologize deeply for having offended Sir Van.”
For once, Aperta spoke sincerely in apology. Given his consistently higher standing, this was likely the most profound apology he could offer. Understanding this, I reluctantly nodded.
“Well, that’s fine then. Let’s settle this with some delicious sweets.”
“That’s a relief. We’re just preparing them now.”
Hearing my response, Aperta relaxed and smiled. His Majesty grinned, shaking his shoulders.
“What a rare sight. Let’s hold a splendid banquet as a celebration tonight. I look forward to drinking while watching the disheartened face of the sly prime minister.”
“Your Majesty, you don’t exactly look free of slyness yourself.”
“Ha ha ha! Your sarcasm lacks bite! Now, everyone! I will show you the finest castle praised by Viscount Van! Enter!”
Seeing Aperta’s reaction, His Majesty laughed heartily and strode into the royal castle. After glancing at his retreating figure with envy, Aperta also proceeded inside.
Watching the two lead the royal guards ahead, Panamera finally leaned close and spoke to me.
