Chapter 142: container house base 🏡

Published: January 13, 2026

The next day. After some trial and error, we completed a base made of container houses that could be connected together.

That very evening, we started setting up the container houses at a camping spot by the roadside and tried linking them. Some walls were made removable, so the containers fit together seamlessly.

As a result, we built a base about the size of a small community center—roughly forty tatami mats in area. It was quite large, but still too small to accommodate tens of thousands of soldiers resting.

Since it was made of wooden blocks, it was sturdy and much lighter than metal. The challenge would be how many we could load onto a single wagon.

I tested how many could be combined, but once the width exceeded ten meters, the structure needed pillars in between to maintain durability. So, the basic plan became to connect bases each about ten meters wide.

By linking containers in a hallway-like fashion, we could easily expand the base's size.

“How do you like it!?”

Ort, exhausted from building so many container houses, asked anxiously. I nodded, signaling there were no problems for the time being.

“All right. Let’s call this complete. We could build a second or third floor if we wanted, but this is just a temporary base, so it’s unnecessary. Everyone, thank you for your hard work.”

Upon announcing completion, Ort and the others raised their hands in joy. Watching the adventurers inspecting the temporary base we created, I smiled and turned my thoughts to the next problem.

Transporting all these container house replicas would require a large wagon. It was getting a bit dark, but I decided to build that as well.

With that in mind, I designed a special wagon with a chassis like a truck. I made the tires large to avoid getting stuck in grooves or bumps, and the cargo bed big enough to carry large items.

Lost in the joy of creation, I was suddenly called by Til, who looked troubled.

“Um, Lord Van? It’s almost... time.”

“Huh? Ah, curfew...!”

Hearing Til’s words, a cold chill slid down my spine. That’s right. It was already dark.

My curfew had been extended from dinner time to sunset, but if I missed even that, I’d definitely get scolded.

“I-I’m going home! We’ll work on the rest tomorrow!”

“Yes!”

Til and Kamushin answered seriously. Arte just smiled wryly and nodded.

Then, the adventurers noticed our change in mood and hurriedly spoke up.

“Lord Van, is it over for today!?”

“What about the payment... the quest completion reward...!?”

I waved my hands to calm them and turned around.

“It’s fine! Come pick it up later at the lord’s manor!”

Just as I was about to leave, Ort raised a hand to stop me.

“Ah, Lord Van...!”

“What is it? What’s wrong?”

Anxious, I replied to Ort, who pointed behind me with a serious face.

“Important people are coming from the adventurer’s town.”

“Important people?”

I wondered what he meant and looked where Ort pointed. A group of about twenty was approaching along the road.

Jarpa and Venturi led the way, with nobles including His Majesty among them. Venturi, who had tested building the container house, looked at it and remarked:

“Oh...! When did this building appear...?”

The nobles began inspecting the container house. Meanwhile, His Majesty walked straight toward us.

“I heard there was something interesting here. I came to take a look.”

His Majesty smiled, explaining how he came. His gaze shifted to the container house, and a smile curved his lips.

“I’m not sure about its defensive capabilities yet, but you’ve made something quite interesting. Would you build one for me to see?”

“Oh, understood. Ort, could you build one?”

Ort agreed eagerly and quickly assembled a container house. Now fully accustomed to it, the four adventurers assembled it in about two minutes.

His Majesty and the nobles were surprised.

“I never thought it would be completed faster than a camping tent...”

“It looks very sturdy.”

“For temporary use, it’s more than enough.”
