At night, we decided to spend the night inside the carriage using our camping gear since we had no home of our own. Ronda wanted to offer her house, but there was no way we could make the elderly gentleman leave.

In the village’s central square, which is kept clear for gatherings, we lit a fire as if camping.

Watching the roaring flames, I couldn’t help but think sentimentally whether, if I had an aptitude for four element magic, we could have easily driven off the bandits.

Flame magic is the most powerful in attack and is also the flashiest on the battlefield. The appearance of a flame magician with high mana can boost morale just by being there.

But since I don’t have it, there’s nothing I can do. For now, I decided to devise a defense plan for the town.

"Just defending isn’t enough. Ideally, we want a state where we can attack without being attacked first."

"Normally, you’d launch attacks from the walls with bows and magic."

"If the walls are low, their effectiveness would be limited."

"Until now, we’d just poke spears through gaps in wooden fences..."

"But that means the enemy has the same conditions and can stab back with spears."

Dee, Espada, Ronda, and I exchanged opinions, but they all seemed rather ordinary.

"How about building catapults?" I proposed, trying to introduce an idea.

The three widened their eyes.

"Ca-catapults...?"

"I’ve never seen one before. What exactly are they?"

"Lord Van, catapults are used in siege warfare, meaning they’re weapons for attacking, not defending."

Each of them responded, but not very enthusiastically. Dee explained to Ronda how catapults work, their power, and why they aren’t practical for a siege defense.

"A catapult throws large stones, but it takes time and predicting where they will land is difficult. So they’re used to destroy immovable things like castle walls or watchtowers."

Hearing this from Dee, I furrowed my brow.

"That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. If we fire boxes filled with lots of small stones, the range would spread out. And if we set them up deep in the village, aiming toward the entrance, we could make them land right in front of the village. Oh, and if we launch bottles filled with oil and torches, they’d ignite and spread fire as soon as they hit the ground."

When I said this, the three looked uneasy.

"Also, maybe large stationary crossbows? If we attach shields in front and build them just behind the walls, I think they’d be quite a threat to attackers."

"Who exactly would build such devices?"

Espada’s sharp gaze turned on me, and I pointed to myself.

"I will."

After I said this, perhaps thinking it impossible, everyone fell silent, holding back any response.

While the others worked on strengthening the fences and setting traps, I took Til and Kamushin to the forest at the back of the village to gather wood.

"The request has been fulfilled already, so it’s okay to head back, right?" I asked Ort, walking beside me.

Ort laughed and waved his hand.

"It sounds interesting. I’m going to stay a bit longer to hunt some demonic beasts and earn a bit of extra money."

Stopping, Ort looked around lightly near the forest entrance.

"This looks promising."

He said, veering off the game trail and walking over the uneven earth.

"Demonic beasts?"

"I sense something, so I’m going to check it out. Lord Van, you should cut the trees near this entrance."

With the atmosphere suddenly tense, Ort entered the forest. Four companions followed after him. The other adventurer party had already left, so only five of us remained in the village, including Ort and Pluriel.

From afar, I sensed Ort fighting. Even during our carriage ride, it seemed like a kind of intuition—Ort noticed enemies and defeated them before they could reach us.
