Doomsday Roulette

Chapter 8: One-Star Evolution 🌟

Published: January 31, 2025

Ye Zhongming felt a chill run down his spine as his mind raced to find a way to respond.

Indeed, he was a reborn person, equipped with abundant surprises and innate skills. Given time, he could potentially become one of the most powerful beings in this city, this country, and even the world.

But right now, he was still just an ordinary person. He could handle a few newly mutated zombies but was utterly unprepared for a swarm of dozens of mutated bugs.

These bugs, even if they hadn't evolved any terrifying abilities yet, were still not something an ordinary person could deal with in such numbers. Their sharp hooks and bristles could easily tear flesh apart, and their mouths and bodily fluids had strong corrosive properties. For a normal human, just a little contact would be enough to cause necrosis of organs, meaning that unless one evolved to at least a four-star level and developed powerful self-healing abilities, they would be left with lifelong disabilities.

In the brief time Ye Zhongming had to think, the swarm of bugs had already reached the villa's entrance, slamming against the sturdy wooden door with loud bangs. Some had even begun to assault the large glass windows. Fortunately, the villa's glass was strong enough; otherwise, both Ye Zhongming and Mu Xinfey would have already been attacked.

However, their safety was only temporary. After a few ineffective crashes, several bugs that had clearly evolved beyond their peers suddenly opened their mouths and sprayed green liquid at the doors and windows. Ye Zhongming and Mu Xinfey couldn't see what was happening on the other side of the wooden door, but they could see the glass windows being corroded at a visible rate by the green liquid.

"Run!"

Ye Zhongming knew they couldn't stay here. Under the current circumstances, unless he became a one-star evolver immediately, their only option was to flee.

As Mu Xinfey, being pulled along, caught sight of the growing hole in the glass, she covered her mouth in disbelief. The aggressiveness displayed by these bugs had thoroughly frightened her.

"To the basement!"

Mu Xinfey, being a former nine-star expert, had decent mental fortitude. After being dragged backward a few steps by Ye Zhongming, she immediately suggested a location.

Ye Zhongming's eyes lit up. He had initially planned to drag her upstairs and jump out of the villa, but he didn't expect that there would be a basement here.

Ye Zhongming preferred fighting over fleeing. If he could eliminate these bugs, he might even gain some benefits.

The improved elixir was ready, and taking it would allow him to become a one-star evolver, but this required a process of about five minutes. There was no time to escape before that, but if they could find a place that could hold off those bugs for five minutes, the outcome would be completely different.

Following Mu Xinfey's directions, they quickly ran to the kitchen, where there was a metal door leading to the basement behind a cabinet!

The two of them squeezed in as quickly as possible just as the nearest bugs had chased into the kitchen.

Inside the basement, the voice-activated lights turned on as soon as they entered.

It was a room of around thirty square meters. One side had several wine cabinets filled with foreign wines, while the other had a few oak barrels, presumably containing red wine. The most eye-catching feature was a massive safe embedded in the wall at the far end of the room.

This was clearly something that an ordinary household shouldn’t possess.

But at that moment, Ye Zhongming couldn’t care less about such trivial matters. Even if the safe was filled with gold and jewels, in the apocalypse, it would be worth next to nothing.

He pulled out a syringe from his bag, drew in the improved one-star enhancement elixir, and injected it directly into the vein of his upper arm.

This was the most effective and fastest way to absorb it. It was much quicker than taking it orally, but of course, it came with a bit more pain.

Mu Xinfey stood aside, watching all of this with evident anticipation.
