Mu Xinfey, mentioned by Commander-in-Chief Wen, was currently in her room, rubbing her head—not out of pain, but exhaustion.
Navigating through a group of uncles, she was fully focused on pondering every question and even every word spoken, fearing there might be hidden traps that could bring losses to the S1 Resistance Zone. With her father’s injuries still not healed, she had to bear this responsibility.
A pair of slender, fair hands reached over to gently massage Mu Xinfey's head, the familiar touch and fragrance helping her relax.
"You already have wrinkles," Bai Shishi suddenly said from behind, causing Mu Xinfey to exclaim and quickly rush to the mirror. But as she stood up, she realized something and turned, glaring at her friend in annoyance.
"Hey, when did you become so mischievous?"
Bai Shishi grinned, "See, your head doesn't hurt anymore."
Mu Xinfey shot a glare at Bai Shishi and suddenly lifted her friend, tossing her onto the bed without reservation. Bai Shishi let out a scream before starting to retaliate, and the two of them instantly became a tangled mess on the bed.
A few minutes later, the two disheveled women lay side by side, gasping for breath as they stared at the metallic-glossed ceiling, suddenly falling into silence.
"Any news about that thing?" Mu Xinfey turned onto her side, propping her chin up to ask.
Bai Shishi shook her head, "I'm afraid of being found out, so I don't dare to inquire everywhere. I can only try my luck at the market and auctions, but so far, I've found nothing."
Mu Xinfey lay back down, her face showing clear disappointment.
Her father's injuries were quite special; despite a long period of care, there had been no improvement. They could only think of ways to maintain the current state and prevent deterioration. This, after all, was not a solution. The longer it dragged on, the more likely the situation would worsen. She came here not only for her father's sake but also because during the meetings at Summit Pass, there would be many large and small transactions or auctions, both open and covert. She hoped to find a drug or method to eliminate the corrosive energy affecting her father.
For the past few days, she had to attend meetings daily and entrusted Bai Shishi with the matters at hand. Unfortunately, until today, there had been no progress.
The two young girls were somewhat lost, unable to imagine what would happen if Mu Xinfey's father faced an accident and how the resistance zone would change.
After gathering their emotions, the two tidied their clothes and headed out for a meal. As soon as they opened the door, they saw a short man walking down the modern-looking corridor; it was Zhang Hengtai, the Commander of G1 district, who had been clashing with the big shots from C district during the meeting.
The stout man approached, slightly tilting his head up due to his height, his fierce-looking face remaining serious.
"Have you considered it?" he asked.
Hearing Zhang Hengtai's question, Mu Xinfey's brows almost shot up as she coldly replied, "No matter when you ask, the answer remains the same."
Zhang Hengtai frowned, "You should know, this is the best way to secure your position."
"That doesn't mean I'm willing to sacrifice myself. Besides..." Mu Xinfey took a deep breath and said, "My position was given by my father, by his subordinates, and has nothing to do with you."
The stout man did not press the issue further, merely nodding, "I hope you remain this strong then. By that time, your position won't just be as a wife."
"The medical room is the fifth door on the left," he added before crossing past them and disappearing from sight.
Bai Shishi comfortingly patted Mu Xinfey on the shoulder, while her friend replied with a big, bitter smile.
Among all the commanders, Zhang Hengtai was the most convinced that Mu Xinfey's father would not recover from his serious injuries. It was unclear where he drew his confidence from, directly proposing a marriage to control the S1 Resistance Zone. This deepened the shadows in Mu Xinfey's heart.
