The Old Dean pondered for a long time before speaking in a slightly desolate tone, “No one is born a book keeper, but some make us believe that we are indeed book keepers in the sky.”

This statement was a bit convoluted, but Ye Zhongming understood some of it.

Although he didn't know the specifics, it seemed that the book keepers had learned some secret matters from back in the day, leading to a strong resentment and hatred towards certain people or races, even towards all the All Races of the Universe.

“If there’s an opportunity, I will explain it to you in detail later. Talking too much now will only add to your pressure,” the Old Dean said.

Ye Zhongming nodded; since someone as powerful as the Old Dean was temporarily unable to do anything, he must also be powerless.

“What do you need me to do?”

Although the Old Dean had mentioned some advantages of the Library Palace, he hadn’t specified how they would help Ye Zhongming. However, before clarifying these points, Ye Zhongming needed to understand what he himself must do for the Library Palace.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust this amiable Old Dean, but rather that he couldn’t afford to trust. No one knew what others were truly thinking.

At this moment, any misstep in his actions within the All Races of the Universe could lead to his demise, and with his current frailty, he would surely meet a gruesome end.

He was Ye Zhongming, but he was not the almost invincible existence from Earth.

“Actually, it’s quite simple; help us break our restraints.”

The Old Dean looked at Ye Zhongming and said, “There are two reasons why we are bound to stay in this Library Palace until our lives are exhausted.”

“The first is a vow made by our ancestors back in the day, using something from the roulette. Once violated, we would suffer the most excruciating torment and die.”

“We cannot leave Starshine City. No, it should be said we cannot leave a certain range of the Library Palace. Even reaching the edge of Starshine City is not allowed.”

Ye Zhongming opened his mouth, wanting to say something but hesitating.

Knowing what Ye Zhongming wanted to say, the Old Dean immediately explained, “We have tried before, even needing to find someone willing to sacrifice their life for testing every few decades. This contract has always existed. Once one becomes a book keeper, the contract will descend upon them.”

Having to seek someone to challenge the contract every few decades, knowing it would probably lead to death but still feeling compelled to try—this feeling was indeed maddening.

But not trying wasn’t an option either; what if one day the contract weakened?

Ye Zhongming couldn’t help but admire those book keepers who ‘tested the waters’ with their lives.

“The second reason is that every selected book keeper must be injected with a form of ‘heavenly fluff’ mental toxin before entering the Library Palace. This toxin acts directly on the primordial power and is extremely difficult to eliminate. If we violate the rules, the three major factions will activate this toxin and control our lives and deaths.”

The rule for book keepers is that once the previous generation dies, they can select a newborn orphan to replace them. How could such a young orphan make a choice? It was just the All Races of the Universe providing a category for the book keepers to make their selections.

These selected orphans would be injected with this silken toxin early on.

Over the years, as book keepers have undergone changes, they now all carry this toxin within their bodies.

Listening to this, Ye Zhongming couldn’t help but have a bewildered thought.

Why did the All Races of the Universe control the book keepers in the Library Palace so tightly? It felt as if they were guarding against something.

But these book keepers, whether in terms of numbers or influence, didn’t seem significant enough to warrant such vigilance from the All Races of the Universe.

Were their individual strengths the issue? Yes, they were strong, but not to the point of being invincible, right? A super race should be significantly stronger than them, shouldn’t it?
