Chapter 123: New Job in the Apocalypse 🌍

Published: February 5, 2025

"Who are you?"

Seeing two unfamiliar men being led into the room by Mo Ye, Ye Zhongming frowned slightly.

In the apocalypse, strangers often mean danger.

However, Ye Zhongming did not sense any aura of an evolver from these two men; they were just ordinary people.

"Hello, we are from the New District Base," said the slightly taller man who spoke first. His expression was calmer than that of his companion behind him.

New District Base?

Upon hearing these four words, Xia Lei immediately stood up, putting down the dagger she was using to cut pork.

Although she did not know what a base was, the term "New District" caught her attention. Her husband worked for the New District government, so if a base was established there, it was very likely that he was there.

Mo Ye had obviously brought these two men here for this reason. He glanced at Xia Lei and then at Ye Zhongming, saying softly, "Let's understand the situation first; it seems like they manage things quite strictly over there."

Ye Zhongming sneered inwardly. Of course, the New District Base would have strict management; that place would grow and eventually become the Cloud Mountain War Group, but it would fall apart six months later.

"How was your New District... Base established?" Xia Lei was already anxious. If she wasn't aware that she could not move an inch without Ye Zhongming, she would have left the group to find her husband by herself.

Now, with these two men who likely came from the same place as her husband in front of her, she could no longer hide her anxious emotions.

The taller man, named Jia Min, looked around the room and stopped at the processed pork before answering, "It was established by the artillery battalion and the New District government, gathering staff from the government building, soldiers from the artillery battalion, and survivors from nearby construction sites and communities."

Xia Lei's eyes lit up at this, and she immediately followed up with a question, "Do you know Qin Yu? He works in the New District government office."

Previously, Jia Min and Daming were just ordinary people without much contact with government officials, so they naturally did not know Xia Lei's husband. With the apocalypse's onset, the New District Base was established hastily, and things were still chaotic; it was impossible for them to recognize Qin Yu among thousands of people.

Seeing the two shake their heads in confusion, a flicker of disappointment and darkness flashed in Xia Lei's eyes, but it was quickly replaced by hope. Since she saw people from the New District Base, it meant that it was still safe, and her husband was likely unharmed.

After all, as government employees, they were supposed to enjoy certain privileges.

"Are you... hunting?"

That term might have only existed in movies, novels, or among the wealthy in peaceful times, but now, it was increasingly used and had become a kind of 'job.'

In response to Ye Zhongming's question, the two immediately nodded, "You know the New District; it has just been developed, and the facilities are not complete. The establishment of the base was also forced, so there is a severe shortage of supplies. In the first ten days after the disaster began, food and other necessities have become very scarce. If you don't want to go hungry, you either need those crystal things from the foreheads of zombies and monsters, or you need weapons and bullets. Otherwise, you can only find food by yourself."

"So tough?" Xia Lei was stunned, thinking of her husband, who was a weak scholar, and her heart couldn't help but worry.

Daming, standing behind Jia Min, stole a glance at the mature woman in camouflage, swallowing hard. He had already been taken aback by Mo Ye's heroic demeanor and exquisite features. After entering, he saw a familiar, charming young woman, and now seeing the full-bodied, mature Xia Lei made him even more impressed. The quality of women in this team was truly high.

This was without mentioning Park Soo-young, who was resting in another room; otherwise, Daming would be even more shocked.
