The sound of a blade piercing flesh is something that some people might find exceptionally pleasant, but after hearing it too many times, it becomes annoying.
Shi Wanjia was one of those people.
He didn't understand why his parents chose such a simple term from "ten thousand households" when naming him, instead of selecting something more profound and beautiful like others.
But it didn't matter anymore; they had turned into zombies, and by now, they were either nothing but bones or wandering somewhere, their evolution levels no lower than their son's.
As an only child, spoiled and raised in comfort, Shi Wanjia was just like many other children from families in this land.
Only he knew how tough it was to survive through the early days of the apocalypse.
He had given up a lot, but he had also gained a lot.
Killing had almost become inevitable, whether the target was a zombie or a human.
Gradually, he grew to love the sound of his knife plunging into cellular tissue, and he had always found that sound quite beautiful.
But now, he was truly fed up.
He pulled the war knife from the gap between the helmet and armor of a knight from the order of the radiant winged ones, and a torrent of blood sprayed out. Shi Wanjia chuckled; it turned out these guys had the same structure as humans.
It's just that the sound of stabbing was a bit unpleasant.
The battle had been going on for several hours, but to Shi Wanjia, it felt like a century had passed.
His arms could barely be lifted; he was exhausted. As a four-star evolver, he had never experienced such a state before.
Beside him was his battle group's leader, now just a corpse. A cold arrow had shot from the city wall, penetrating his heart directly. That arrow, which glowed as if indestructible, could even kill a five-star evolver in a second.
"Leader, you're dead. So tell me, what did you bring us here for?" Shi Wanjia slumped to the ground, weakly conversing with the lifeless eyes of his leader.
"I told you, rewards and bounties aren't easy to obtain!" Shi Wanjia closed the leader's eyes and glanced at the sky, where the warriors of the winged order had raised their mounts higher.
This wave of attacks had been repelled, but Shi Wanjia felt no relief. He moved his sore body and rolled beneath the arrow slits of the city wall, knowing that the catapults below were about to launch again.
Since the Heavenly Shield had disappeared, the Temple of Dawn had launched a fierce attack.
The sky was filled with the continuous assault of the winged order, starting with arrows, followed by throwing short guns, and finally charging down, continuously using speed to reap the lives of the guards on the wall.
The ground attacks were even more ferocious and intense. Under the protection of the Giant Shield warriors, the siege troops with various instruments attacked from all directions of the city wall, with countless arrows covering the sky and blocking out the sun.
The catapults were positioned far behind, and once the friendly forces paused their attacks, they would bombard the city wall. Huge stones, propelled by inertia, could break apart even the hardest stone when they struck the arrow slits.
The most terrifying were the Temple of Dawn warriors charging through the Ice Crystal Road. They could all approach or even surpass the city wall. Although they paid the highest price, in these few hours, they had shattered the wall connected by the Ice Crystal Road, and now, it led straight into the city.
As for how many people had died, no one remembered clearly anymore.
Ye Zhongming had yet to make a move, and neither had the king zun. It was not yet their time to act, but they were not idle either. They helped rescue the wounded, carried the injured down from the city, and transported supplies for the defense back to the wall...
They contributed to the defense just like those logistics personnel.
The command had been fully entrusted to Xia Lei and Mo Ye, two people from Earth.
Because these king zun found that their experience in defending the city was not as rich as that of these two women, who were also more familiar with the equipment of Earth, allowing for a more reasonable application of resources.
