“It’s dark…”

Beyond the Labyrinth Gate, it was dim.

There were some lights on the walls, but unlike earlier when outside light was coming in, it was much darker.

We suppressed our impatience and waited for our eyes to adjust before stepping forward.

“Th-there’s someone there!”

“It’s soldiers from the Labyrinth Front Army. Sorry for causing a ruckus.”

Zaki explained to the startled Sina and apologized to the soldiers.

There were several positions set up along the winding stairs, each manned by a few soldiers and equipped with huge crossbows.

According to Zaki, this was to prevent monsters from escaping the labyrinth.

At the bottom of the stairs was a thick iron door, beyond which lay a vast room filled with fortress-like facilities and many soldiers.

“Come on, don’t stop. If you’re new explorers, I recommend taking the left corridor.”

A foxman officer urged us forward.

At that moment, a huge fist came down on the foxman’s head.

“—Gehya!”

“Don’t say unnecessary things. It’s up to the explorers to choose their path.”

“That’s harsh, captain. You should say it with words.”

The mighty arm of a barbarian-like man, who seemed to be the captain, spoke.

“You wouldn’t learn even if I said it with words. Besides, you’re the captain now, aren’t you?”

“Just a habit. By the way, why is the general’s assistant here?”

“Sometimes I need to get some fresh air from the front lines, or I get out of shape.”

“You ran away from paperwork again. I’m going to tell the secretary—”

The fox officer dodged another fist with a sharp step.

“No violence!”

The fox officer teased as the general’s assistant’s fist chased after him.

“Let’s go, the drama can wait.”

Rasa’s words made sense, so we took the left path recommended by the foxman officer.

“What are you doing?”

When I wrapped a cloth over my mouth, Rasa keenly noticed and asked.

“My little sister told me to cover my mouth until I get used to the labyrinth.”

Did she call it a mask?

“Again with your sister. She sounds like my mom.”

“Don’t you think she doesn’t see you as her brother?”

“You don’t really pull it off either.”

Gon and Keros mocked me, and Sina put me down, which was embarrassing. But whenever my sister insisted on something strongly, it always had a reason, so I kept the cloth on.

“There! A monster!”

Gon shouted, and we rushed at the monster with all our might.

From ahead, another party charged at a giant rat monster.

We were a step behind; before Gon could reach it, the other party threw stones to distract the rat and started attacking first.

“Damn! We found it first!”

Gon stamped his foot.

I felt the same but couldn’t shout because breathing was difficult with the cloth over my mouth.

This was harder to breathe through than I thought. I should loosen it a bit.

“There’s one over there too!”

Keros ran off.

“Where?”

“Above.”

A giant moth-like monster was flying near the ceiling.

“It’s coming this way!”

Gon shouted and readied his spear.

We lined up beside Gon, waiting for the moth monster.

“—Now!”

Gon thrust his spear upward, and we followed suit.

We were a bit early. The moth stopped in midair, just beyond the reach of our spears, fluttering its oddly patterned wings.

Scales scattered from its wings as it stopped.

—This is bad.

I let go of the spear with one hand and pressed the cloth against my mouth.

Gon and the others started coughing violently, rolling on the floor.

I squinted to track the moth’s movements, trying to avoid inhaling the scales.

Even with squinted eyes, tears kept streaming down.

“It’s coming!”
