This is the third chapter.
Eleonora recovered her composure surprisingly quickly.
"I'm fine now. I apologize for earlier."
"There's no need to apologize. When you returned home, you said (…………). Your family before you got married and left home wasn’t like that, was it?"
"Yes... 'The king sets an example for the higher nobles, and the higher nobles set an example for lower nobles like us. We must set an example for the common people,' and 'Nobles live for the people. For that, sometimes we must endure shame and hardship ourselves'... These were phrases my father used to repeat to us like a motto. To live correctly as nobles, and as people.
My father once faced adversity sincerely and struggled to improve the situation. My brothers diligently trained under such a father to become trustworthy lords of the territory and their aides... they were a trustworthy lord and family."
That’s what I thought. Because Eleonora's tone always sounded like “I was betrayed by those I trusted.” If the family she reunited with had changed that much, it’s natural for her to be shaken.
As I listened further, it turned out that because they were such people, Eleonora strove to learn everything she could and strengthen her skills to support her family. Aiming to become a court mage was also part of this.
"A court mage is not just a magic specialist but a position serving the king, wielding significant influence even in noble society. They receive an exceptionally high salary compared to ordinary mages, and if fortunate enough to achieve great feats, they can receive rewards from his majesty the king.
Also, regardless of accomplishments, court mages receive marriage proposals from noble families wishing to incorporate excellent bloodlines. If among them there is a proposal from a family ranked above the four main houses... no, as long as it is a family powerful enough to resist control, that’s all that mattered.
Born into the Baron Lansole's household, I was determined to dedicate everything to my house and territory, studying relentlessly without distraction."
At this point, her once resolute voice became somewhat weak.
She self-deprecatingly said that her pursuit of power had narrowed her perspective.
The cunning and ruthless lords surely understood that her becoming a court mage would be inconvenient for the four main houses.
Soon after receiving her recommendation, pressure was applied to her family, and the path to becoming a court mage was cut off under the pretense of marriage. After graduation, she was also taken hostage through her family.
"But for the sake of the territory and the people, I was willing to be abandoned by my family. I believed my father and brothers would understand and continue to resist. I suppose that’s why I feel betrayed... Considering the feelings of those left behind, perhaps I have no right to blame my family."
She seemed to have poured out all her words with a sense of helplessness. Whether she was thinking about what to say next or waiting for my response, the conversation stopped for a moment.
...Of course, as an outsider, I can't understand the thoughts of Eleonora’s family. Even if I could, it’s also a matter of her own heart. Even if I could accurately speak for her family, it wouldn’t guarantee her peace.
"...Eleonora, regarding this matter, I have no definitive words. I can say plenty of general or superficial statements that don’t consider the feelings of those involved, but that would only be annoying and unhelpful."
"? Yes, I suppose so."
"But Eleonora, you are my subordinate and someone I know well. I want to be as helpful as possible. So, I’ll suggest some cooperation plans within my ability. The broad directions fall into three categories: 'maintain the status quo,' 'escape,' or 'fight.'
Maintaining the status quo means continuing as things are. I have no intention of rushing or driving you away. So, until you decide on the future, feel free to stay at Gimul and lend me your strength."
