“Heh, so you’ve got a new slime born over there?”
At noon, as usual, we exchanged information while having lunch. I reported that my studies on cursed arts were going well, and that there was a newly evolved cursed slime.
“That’s not all. Lord Rosenberg also told me about a slime called the miasma slime.”
Recalling the Execution Ground of Starvation and Thirst, I wondered if there were slimes that absorbed miasma. When I asked, I learned that in regions severely affected by miasma or in miasma pools—that is, areas with dense miasma—there are occasionally slimes found.
“Because they scatter miasma around them, it’s recommended to exterminate them if found. But that’s precisely because they do exist. They’re not slimes you can easily find, but if you search, there’s a possibility.”
“However, even if you find one, it might be difficult to take that slime elsewhere. Be prepared that some procedures or permissions may be necessary.”
Since miasma is clearly hazardous, such precautions are understandable. However, there is no rule explicitly forbidding keeping them.
First, no one wants to keep dangerous magical beasts that spread miasma. They’re too dangerous and hard to use for crimes. So there’s no point in banning the breeding of beasts that no one would raise anyway. Although it might be a legal loophole—anyway, it seems there is no clear ban on keeping them.
In that case, I just need to use my position as an engineer and obtain permission from the Duke’s household for slime research. I genuinely want to study miasma slimes, and if I find one, I will observe it directly. If it eats miasma, it could be very useful for purifying miasma.
Also, regarding obtaining miasma slimes, I think it’s likely possible to evolve them without having to search elsewhere. Using the miasma accumulated in this mountain’s miasma zone, I should be able to evolve a slime.
…Although, trying that evolution is still far off.
The first reason is that I need to find slimes that like miasma. I tested the cursed slime’s reaction to miasma collected underground at the experimental site, but it doesn’t like it. Even if it did, I wouldn’t evolve it until I could observe it sufficiently.
Based on the reactions to miasma, the nature of miasma, and experience evolving poison slimes, I expect that unless the slime’s taste matches miasma, the lethality will be high. I may give poison from curiosity, but I have no intention of killing slimes unnecessarily.
Since miasma is a form of mana, I think evolving into a miasma slime would be similar to cursed slime. For now, I’ll look for slimes that like dark-elemental attributes, evolve them into dark slimes, and observe their reactions to see if they then evolve into miasma slimes or another type.
Whether “scattering miasma” is ecological or a hunting or defensive reaction changes the situation, but if miasma slimes eat miasma, they could be used for purifying or storing miasma and dealing with it.
“That said, appropriate safety measures will be needed. Even with an experimental site, we don’t want unnecessary damage. Until the conditions are ready, I want to improve my skills in dealing with miasma.”
“That’s good. We don’t have knowledge of purification or cursed arts, but we do feel that something bad exists in that land.”
When Miseria of the Tiger tribe said that, not only the other three beastmen but also Jeff from the Human race nodded deeply. They must have felt the dense miasma around the miasma zone when they helped with the purification this morning.
“That was our situation. How about the mountain side?”
“We focused on investigating the easier-to-use land, considering that Ryoma might develop the mountain.”
Jeff was probably referring to the plateau Syria and others talked about yesterday.
“Like yesterday, the creatures we saw were just insects and small animals. No big or dangerous ones. It might not be good for hunting, but aside from that miasma zone, this mountain seems safe.”
