Today, three chapters posted simultaneously.

This is chapter one.

Night

“Huh? Ms. Eleonora, what’s the matter?”

Two separate dormitories for men and women had been built. After dinner, everyone was meant to relax and rest. But it was a bit early to sleep, so I stepped outside to enjoy the night breeze—and there was Ms. Eleonora.

She was holding a stack of papers that looked like documents close to her chest, standing a little away from the dormitory entrance. Looking closely, I noticed many footprints on the ground near her feet, indicating she had been pacing around here for a while.

“Lord Takebayashi. I have compiled today’s activities into these documents, so I came to have you review them when you have time. However, I wondered if it was appropriate for me to enter the men’s dormitory area.”

“It’s just that we separated the dorms but forgot to call you when needed… Let’s improve that from tomorrow onward.”

I took the documents she prepared and gave the contents a quick glance. Fortunately, there was a magic tool lighting the entrance, so it was bright enough to read the papers here. But as I skimmed the surprisingly thick documents, I was amazed.

“Not only the work report but also a list of the miasma zone’s conditions and inspection results. Then a report for the Duke’s household based on that. On top of that, a summary of what Lord Rosenberg taught and even a glossary of terms—all compiled in such a short time!?”

“I already thought you were competent enough, but you must be tired after helping with the measurements today...”

“I only formatted the documents into this shape after dinner, but I organized the information mostly during the work earlier today. Since most of the time measuring the miasma concentration was spent moving around, there was time to think. Regarding the cursed arts instruction, it’s almost exactly as Lord Rosenberg said. Nothing too special.”

Even so, that volume... She hadn’t left my side much before dinner, so there shouldn’t have been time to work. So naturally, she had only started after dinner—and it had been just over two hours. Without handy tools like a computer, it was all handwritten.

Most of the measuring time was spent moving, so maybe there was time. But I was also busy as the recorder, noting down the measurements from the magic tools, all while walking mountain paths. Ms. Eleonora was probably climbing up and down slopes with ropes too...

She even took the initiative to make a glossary of cursed arts terms, which I didn’t ask for. I appreciate it, but is she pushing herself too hard?

“Have I overstepped?”

“No! Not at all. I was just amazed by your competence. The class records and glossary are extremely helpful for review as well.”

“You flatter me. I thought you might not need it, but since I have experience from my student days with magic studies, I wanted to help as much as I could.”

“Need it? I don’t think that’s true at all.”

She seemed sincere, not just humble.

“I’ve heard that you, Lord Takebayashi, grew up in the Tree Sea, a somewhat special environment. But you already possess advanced foundational knowledge required for learning magic.

There are two main reasons for this. First, before anything, I was told by His Grace the Duke that you read magic books obtained from the magic guild on your own.”

Magic books? That’s true—I have asked the Duke’s household to send me magic books from time to time, which I read during my free time. But that alone can’t explain why you think you don’t need help learning magic, right?

“Magic books” is a general term for all magic-related books. There were research books and papers, but most were magic textbooks, right?”

“That’s right. But did you find them difficult to understand?”

“More like hard to read. I remember there were lots of metaphors and poetic expressions.”

The first thing that came to mind was a book on the basics of water magic that had an entire page of poetry just to say, “Water flows from high places to low places.” I was impressed that someone could write a whole page of poem about something so simple.
