“So, that’s how it ended up in the end.”

Mr. Glen, who had returned for lunch, cast his gaze toward the grass where a mimic slime was dashing through, leading a horde of undead behind it.

“Unfortunately, at this point, even if I ride it, I’d only be a hindrance. That mimic slime originally lived in this Tree Sea, and to make full use of the take ostrich’s leg strength while transformed, we concluded it’s more efficient and safer for it to run around solo.

Besides, the undead are more attracted to the mimic slime than to me. The humanoid undead exhibit hunting-like behaviors, and the beast zombies, including the raptors, are almost completely lured when I use the take ostrich’s abilities.”

“Hmm... Well, thanks to that, I can eat my lunch properly, so it’s a relief.”

“We managed to automate both the traps and undead gathering by leaving it to the slimes.”

With some extra time on our hands, I put a little more effort into preparing lunch. I thought the karaage from yesterday could have been seasoned more heavily, so today I made a rich garlic-flavored tatsuta-age sandwich, using freshly baked soft bread and fresh leafy greens. The side dish was French fries.

I also prepared egg sandwiches and potato salad sandwiches just in case he didn’t want fried food two days in a row, but Mr. Glen didn’t mind at all. As usual, he ate heartily, and the food disappeared from his plate in no time.

Watching that, I finished my meal too, and just as I was done eating—

“Ah!”

“What’s wrong?”

“The mimic slime is being chased by a living raptor. It seems to have accidentally dragged it along while attracting the undead. Now it's running this way.”

“Alright, then let's have a little fun before lunch.”

The plan was set in an instant, and we prepared to intercept.

“There they are!”

“We’ve also confirmed them. We'll separate the undead from the living ones. ‘Holy Flame Carpet.’”

As the mimic slime dashed past us, I cast a spell. Flames mixed with light-attribute mana spread thinly and widely, forming a red and golden carpet-like blaze.

The enemy group, excited by the take ostrich’s lure pheromones, didn’t retreat or avoid the flames but ran right through them. Since the range was prioritized and the fire intensity wasn’t very strong, they took little damage.

However, the zombified raptors mixed in were different. Their legs, essential for running and vulnerable to light-attribute magic, took fatal damage, causing them to fall and be consumed by the flames. As a result, only living raptors passed through the fire.

After that, it was just a matter of dealing with them normally.

“Oi!!”

Normally, opponents charging straight at you in a frenzy would be dangerous due to momentum, but for Mr. Glen, they seemed to be the easiest kind of opponent. Swinging his adamantite hammer around, the raptors rushed forward and were knocked back all at once.

I killed the individuals who luckily avoided becoming part of the crowd with magic and my blade. Dividing the work this way, we finished off the attacking raptors in under a minute.

“All done. Hey, is that fire alright as it is?”

“I think so. This area is quite humid, and the rapid spread was due to my magic. It won’t spread so naturally. Even if it did, the sudden daily downpours would soon put it out.”

Originally, I was supposed to come here alone, and naturally, planned to handle undead extermination solo. I had prepared for large-area magic accordingly, considering this as well. Any damage to the surroundings would be minor.

“Still, it seems like the nearby undead have been cleared faster than expected.”

“Hmm? Now that you mention it, when we arrived, the village surroundings were full of undead. Maybe they noticed the reduction and the living raptor packs started approaching.”

“I instructed the mimic slime to run only inside the village’s outer wall, so I suppose that’s right. I thought clearing the undead around would take at least a day, but at this rate, we might start dealing with the central mansion.”
