Today, two chapters posted simultaneously.
This is the second chapter.
After finishing the formalities at the Adventurers' Guild and walking through the city as the sun set, we returned to the inn. From there, everyone began preparing for tomorrow’s exploration.
I was allowed to stay in the "servant’s room" attached to the noble’s quarters, so I returned to my room with Lord Reinbach. Lord Reinbach handed the jacket he had been wearing to Mr. Sebas, then settled onto the sofa and spoke.
“A lot happened, but I’m glad nothing serious happened.”
“Yes, indeed. Thanks to that, the guild discussions ended quickly, and I can use my Guild Card without worry.”
Lord Reinbach is the former head of the Duke’s household, accompanied by Mr. Seaver, the former knight commander, and Miss Remily, a former court mage. Perhaps it was natural to receive VIP treatment from three such distinguished companions… but the treatment was completely different and much more courteous than at the guild the other day.
That experience was somewhat uncomfortable, but thanks to it, the check on my Guild Card went through without issue. Incidentally, the result was no problem at all. It was properly marked as a c-rank Guild Card, with no strange entries or traps.
“If it’s something like this, just say the word and I’ll help anytime. I mentioned this before the match—Ryoma-kun, I owe you a great debt. I can’t possibly say it’s ‘repaid’ just by this, and I want to thank you properly.”
“Separate from the year-end matter?”
“Indeed. Thank you for fighting with Seaver. The truth is, he’s been mentally troubled for a long time… Of course, age has taken its toll, but more than that, the tedious paperwork and stifling days didn’t suit him. It was better when he had chances on the front lines, but since becoming knight commander, especially in recent years, every time I saw him, he seemed weaker.
But thanks to you taking him on, even if not at his peak, he’s regained much of his old fighting spirit. I never thought he’d stop by the guild and decide to become an adventurer… He really is extreme or decisive in what he does.”
“That’s true… I was surprised myself.”
It was good that Mr. Seaver had regained his vigor, but none of us, including myself and my friends, had expected him to suddenly decide to become an adventurer.
It was such a sudden development that there was talk about whether he should rejoin the knight corps instead. But Mr. Seaver insisted, “I resigned of my own will, despite opposition, so asking to be reinstated now would be selfish. The handover to my successor has already been done, and even if I were reinstated, it would cause confusion among the knight corps and related parties. Also, it’s true I’m past my prime now, so I plan to use my remaining strength and time to help people as an adventurer.”
That was probably the case when he left the knight corps as well. His resolve was firm, and while I was confirming the Guild Card, he had already completed his adventurer registration. His rank was provisionally a-rank, with s-rank promotion almost assured.
He was fine starting at f rank, but considering his skills and experience as a former knight commander, Tigger, the guild master, was humbly insistent he couldn’t be ranked lower than this.
As soon as he joined the guild, even the rougher adventurers made way for him, and the reception and guild master were overwhelmed just by the registration process, showing how much respect and trust the former knight commander Seaver had earned.
“If I could be of help, that’s good, and it also made me realize my own shortcomings, so I’m grateful as well.”
“If it helped you, Ryoma-kun, that’s good. But that’s that, this is this. If you ever have any trouble, call on me anytime. I can’t say I can do everything, but I can handle a good deal. And even if not, I can always listen.”
“Yes, I will definitely do so.”
I replied, and Lord Reinbach nodded with satisfaction, then casually glanced at my body.
