This is the third chapter of the story.

The day after being attacked by The Greatsword Brothers and the black-clad figures, I loaded supplies into the spatial magic as planned and returned to the city. While handing over the supplies, I reported the events of last night.

Naturally, everyone dispatched from the Duke's household — especially Ms. Lilian, who had said everything was fine before heading home — scolded me, saying, "You're doing reckless things again!"

However, since I had returned safely and the city’s reconstruction needed to proceed quickly, the issue was ultimately put on hold for the time being.

Fortunately, it seemed that the enemy's plan ended with my assassination attempt; there were no further attacks or disruptions afterward. Though some self-proclaimed vigilantes and troublemakers were left behind like leftovers, through continuous dealing with them and ongoing support, Gimul Town gradually regained its calm.

I took on the necessary work for that... and then a week passed.

“Sorry to interrupt your conversation.”

“What is it?”

While working on additional food production and shipping at the provisional “Food Production Base,” which used an empty lot in the ruins of the slum district, Ms. Lilian arrived in quite a hurry. It turned out that Mr. Reinhardt and the others who had been in the Royal Capital had returned and were already at the security company.

“That’s quick, isn’t it? I heard the year-end and New Year period is an important social season for nobles, and it’s only the fourth day of the new year.”

“They only attended the most important ceremony held at the start of the year and then brought their schedule forward. Currently, they’re receiving reports from the government offices and various guilds to grasp the situation, and afterward, they need to hold meetings with various parties. They requested to have a relaxed talk with Lord Ryoma tonight.”

“Understood. I don’t have any particular plans, so let’s wrap up early today. I think it will be just the right timing once I finish growing the crops from the request we just received.”

“Very well. One more thing, where is Lord Eudam?”

“Mr. Eudam is in the vegetable storage room on the third floor.”

“The Duke and Duchess want to hear from him as well, so they would like him to come to the security company soon.”

“Ah... I see. Understood, I’ll guide him.

Excuse me, I’ll be back immediately.”

“I understand. I’ll continue with the shipping work.”

Leaving the assistance from the Commercial Guild in charge, I followed Ms. Lilian up the stairs marked with “Beware of Magical Beasts” and “No Entry” signs.

“Every time I come here, I think about it — you are really growing crops inside a building.”

“It’s like growing plants in pots.”

Climbing the stairs to the second floor, Ms. Lilian’s gaze fell on a windowless room filled with soil, illuminated by light generated from magic tools embedded in the ceiling. Potatoes grown in an environment with a constant temperature were being harvested by goblins.

The place resembled a modern food production factory, but there was no hint of high-tech from its appearance. It felt like a concrete commercial building with soil brought in to create a field.

“I understand it’s like a greenhouse, but it feels strange... No, I never imagined that the new type of slime I heard about recently would actually be the field itself.”

“I was also surprised when the scavengers I entrusted with farming work evolved into compost slimes and fertile soil slimes. I’m no longer amazed by it, but I was like, ‘So this is how it turns out!’”

The compost slime’s appearance changes into a lump of soil, and the fertilizer it produces changes from liquid to something like compost, emitting high heat during production. The fertilizer’s properties also shifted slightly, making it less likely to cause “demonization,” a phenomenon that occurs when excess fertilizer is applied to crops.
