This is the fifth chapter.
"Welcome back~"
As I returned to the inn, struggling to figure out a new skill, a man at the reception called out to me.
The entrance was pitch dark, so I thought no one was there... but that's just perfect.
"Excuse me, is there a place around here where I can release my familiar without causing trouble? It’s a bird-type magical beast—"
Since Mr. Pedro definitely used this path, I wanted to take another look at the forest.
After explaining the situation to the man at reception,
“If that’s the case, feel free to use the rooftop. Nobody’s using it at this hour... Oh, just watch out if there’s any laundry hanging.”
“Thank you very much. That helps a lot.”
“Keeping the road safe is our lifeline, after all.”
He gladly gave permission, so I headed straight for the rooftop.
I climbed the wooden stairs he pointed out, opened the door at the top, and saw the moonlit clotheslines stretched under a starry sky. Other than the safety railing around the edge, there was nothing else, so from here, I could fly off freely in any direction.
“‘Dimension Home’”
““““““Pirororo!””””””
“Oops!”
This is an inn at night, so keep it down.
““““““Pi...””””””
Thanks for understanding.
“Also, I’d like your help one more time. Please scout the whole mountain from above the town.”
““““““Pi!””””””
Six limule birds flew off in a V-formation into the clear starry sky.
Leading them was the only high-grade species, the nightmare limule bird named “Ains.” When hunting prey for food, he takes charge unless I give other orders. He often uses my head as a perch—a leader among the six.
Following him were “Zwei” and “Drei.” These two seem to enjoy delivering letters, so whenever I send mail, I usually entrust one of them. But they have big appetites and are quite cheeky about demanding extra food after returning home.
I’ve been rewarding them accordingly, but they seem to have grown slightly larger since we contracted. From subtle hints in the letters, the recipients also prepare rewards... So I’m not sure if it’s growth or just getting chubby. These two seem like they need watching.
Behind them flew “Fia” and “Fünf.” Of the six, these two are the only females, and they seem to get along well with Zwei and Drei respectively. They’ve left the large flock to stay with me, so maybe soon there will be more family members.
Lastly, “Zex” flew at the rear. The smallest of the six, but when I watch him fly outside the formation, he seems to be the fastest. He probably stays at the back to keep pace with the others.
He just loves flying. Sometimes he darts through the abandoned mine at bullet speed. Probably a speed freak. Like the metal slimes, I hope he stays out of accidents.
“Piroro”
At the faint call from Ains, the six birds scattered neatly in six directions.
Well then... sharing their vision.
“...Alright.”
No obvious problems. Ains’ view from the high sky appeared clearly in my mind. The post town’s lights glittered like stars in the dark.
“Flying pretty high…”
What about the others?
I switched the view but they all showed similar scenes.
“After all, it’s night…”
Mostly just darkness.
They say if the distance between familiar and tamer gets too great, vision sharing fails—but in that case, I shouldn’t see even darkness. So it’s probably not a distance issue.
Zex is currently the farthest away. Switching to his view, he’s already near the foot of the mountain... Looks like he’s enjoying cutting through the open sky with no obstacles. Good for him, but don’t forget to look for clues... okay?
I reminded him and suddenly realized—
From here to the foot of the mountain is definitely more than 100 or 200 meters in a straight line. Even with the altitude, the view is far-reaching... Hey, hasn’t communication gotten smoother than before?
Could my beast taming magic skills have suddenly improved? If so, when did that happen? What triggered it? The only thing related I can think of is the aptitude test I took. But could that alone cause such a change?
