Chapter 158: The Forgotten Person
Laura paced restlessly in the study. For her, the news brought back by Buffy was truly terrible.
She sympathized with the budah family, but now that Buffy had failed to complete his mission, it was undoubtedly bad news for her. This meant that the Versailles Family might suffer internal strife.
If it were any other time, the chaos within the Versailles Family could be brushed aside, but this time, it was life-threatening. It did not only concern the Versailles Family itself; it involved countless ordinary families in the Versailles Principality.
Kun Zheng also frowned as he sat in the study. He really didn't know how to handle this situation. They wanted to intervene, but if things went wrong, they could easily get caught in the whirlwind and sink deeper.
However, the problem was that if they did not get involved, as soon as things reached a conclusion, they would certainly be the first to suffer. Thus, they had no choice but to participate.
But participating and how to participate were different. The timing and method of involvement were crucial. If the opportunity and approach were correct, they could not only save themselves but also gain the greatest benefits.
At that moment, a servant rushed in from outside and bowed to Laura, saying, "Miss, we just received news that the Xinya Family and several other major families have already taken action. However, they have not raised grain prices and have sent people to contact the second elder and third elder of the Versailles Family."
Laura furrowed her brows and waved her hand, saying, "Go on, keep investigating. If there are any new developments, report to me immediately." The servant acknowledged and bowed before leaving.
Laura turned to Kun Zheng and asked, "Grandpa Kun Zheng, what do Xinya and the others want? Do they intend to support the second elder or the third elder to take power?"
Kun Zheng nodded and replied, "I'm afraid it might be like that. If the second elder or the third elder truly forms an alliance with them, they might even abandon this grain price raising action. As long as they can elevate one of those elders, they will receive strong support from that elder, allowing them to monopolize the entire market of the Versailles Principality. These guys are really calculating."
Laura frowned and asked, "What should we do? We can't just wait, can we? That would be too unfavorable for us."
Kun Zheng's eyes flashed with insight and said, "Wait? Of course we can't just wait; that would make us increasingly passive, and in the end, we might be squeezed out by them. Don't think that just because we helped the Versailles Family with the grain issue, they will be grateful to us. Those guys don't care whether you helped them or not; as long as there are sufficient benefits, everything can be sold. What we need to do now is to make contact with someone from the Versailles Family to support him. Even if he can't take power, he needs to have a certain degree of influence within the Versailles Family so that we can protect our business."
Laura paused, "Who? Now that it seems the Xinya Family has already contacted the second elder and third elder, if we go now, it would be too late."
Kun Zheng smiled slightly, "Don't forget, there is still one person in the Versailles Family. This person used to have power, but later, to support the budah family, his power was diminished. Isn't this a good opportunity?"
Laura was stunned as she immediately thought of who Kun Zheng was referring to: Ivan, the nominal clan leader of the Versailles Family and the duke of the Versailles Principality.
Ivan's power used to be comparable to that of the grand elder, but because he was young and lacked political experience, combined with his support for the budah family, his power was significantly reduced by the grand elder and others. Recently, he had been living in seclusion, completely becoming a wooden figure, merely a decoration. Initially, Laura truly did not consider him.
Kun Zheng observed Laura's expression and smiled slightly, "In recent times, Ivan has completely fallen silent; it seems people have forgotten about his existence. But isn't this his cleverness? Does he really have no power at all? No, although his power has been significantly reduced, he has not been completely eliminated. He still has some power left; it's just that he has been too patient recently, leading people to forget about him."
