Chapter 440: Visitors and Countermeasures 🚪

As I was holed up in the workshop reviewing the lord candidates, I blinked at the schedule that was mentioned for the near future.

“Aub Arensbach isn’t feeling well, right? Are they planning to stay for a long time during that period?”

I wondered if it was because they were so pressed to hand over things to the high priest as soon as possible. When I tilted my head in confusion, the high priest frowned.

“Rosemine, I do not know for certain if Aub Arensbach’s condition is truly bad.”

“Huh?”

“I told you it’s information from Justox. It’s not something to be fully trusted, and it might be something kept secret from those around. At the very least, Aub’s health should not be spoken of openly. It would be troublesome if strange suspicions arose, causing caution or attempts to trace the source.”

Apparently, Aub’s illness, which might affect the lord succession, is not something to be spoken of publicly. I was told not to ever ask Georgine or Dietlinde about Aub’s condition.

“So it’s a top secret matter for Arensbach? The high priest is hiding the source of the information, aren’t you?”

“It’s just too ridiculous and not credible enough.”

The high priest shrugged lightly, looking as if he himself didn’t really trust the source. Even if the source seemed shady, the situation around them suggested it might not be entirely false.

“…But if there’s a risk of death during the high priest’s engagement period, that must mean the condition is quite serious?”

“Rosemine, death does not come only from illness. Danger to life can come from many other things as well.”

That was all the high priest said, but the possible answers I imagined were too frightening, so I couldn’t ask anything more. It seemed better to change the topic quickly.

“By the way, high priest, you and Lady Dietlinde are able to marry, right?”

“What do you mean?”

“In the world I remember, or rather where I lived, uncles and nieces cannot marry.”

I explained that it was a law in my world, and the high priest showed some interest. So I spoke a little about marriage with relatives.

“Laws differ by country, so uncles marrying nieces might not be unusual. Are there no taboos about marriage in Jurgenschmidt?”

The high priest answered, “It’s not that there aren’t.”

“The mother’s bloodline is emphasized because the mother greatly influences the child’s mana. Since my mother isn’t Veronica, I can marry. But even if uncle and niece, Sylvester and Dietlinde cannot marry.”

Whether they are of the same mother or different mothers is a major dividing line. Same mother cousins are allowed to marry.

“If different mothers, siblings can marry. You and Wilfried are such a case, right?”

“Are adopted daughters and half-sisters treated the same…?”

I blinked, feeling the difference in common sense after a long time.

“It will be difficult to bridge such differences in common sense from now on.”

“Will you tell someone? That I have memories from another world?”

The high priest thought deeply about my question, then slowly shook his head.

“The image of you as the saint of Ehrenfest has become too large. It’s better not to spread such things. Who knows how you might be idolized.”

The saint legend, which was convenient for making me the lord’s adopted daughter, had now become nothing but a danger since the Central Temple had taken notice.

“What should I do if I want to ask such questions in the future?”

I think there will be many times when I can’t adjust to their common sense and will be at a loss. After thinking for a while, the high priest walked over to a shelf in the workshop.

“Write letters using this. Ink that only responds to the creator’s mana can cross the boundary gate without problems.”

He placed a bottle of disappearing ink made with his mana right in front of me. Ordnance cannot cross the domain boundaries. Exchanges across domains basically become magic tool letters. The letter’s magical bird is inspected once at the boundary gate, and if there’s no problem, it flies to the recipient.
