…Library, library, I get to go to the library~!
From the morning, I was so excited that Brynhildr frowned and said, “I don’t think that matches your outfit,” as she helped me put on the armband of the library committee member. Then, I headed to the dining hall.
“Let’s go to the library right away today.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t have enough attendants to accompany you to the library, so please wait until tomorrow.”
My Brother Cornelius immediately rejected my plan. Today, there was a practical training session with Ditter, which all knight apprentices had to attend.
“Lady Rosemine, please stay in your room with Filine. There won’t be any Guard Knights in the morning, so don’t leave your room until lunch. In the afternoon, Leonore will be present, but there won’t be enough people to go to the library. The farthest you can go in the afternoon is the dormitory’s multipurpose hall. Understood?”
“…Understood.”
I obediently nodded at Brother Cornelius’s stern, jet-black gaze that allowed no objections. I understood that this was an important lecture for the knight apprentices and that my selfishness wouldn’t work, but my excitement instantly deflated.
…I worked hard for a perfect pass, and yet, tsk…
“Lady Rosemine, Lord Ferdinand entrusted me with some books for times like this. Why not spend the day reading and studying magic circles and magic tools? Thorough preparation is necessary to create the ideal library.”
“That’s an excellent idea, Hartmut.”
If I can’t go to the library, then I have no choice. I’ll spend the day reading the books Hartmut received from the high priest. Preparing for the ideal library makes my heart flutter with excitement. My mood lifted slightly.
“Since you completed Lord Ferdinand’s previous assignment admirably, I believe you can handle this one, Lady Rosemine.”
As Hartmut said, I had cleared the previous assignment of consolidating magic circles written in the book I read and creating a single magic circle. Theoretically, it should be correct. If it works properly, I’ll be able to return overdue books to the library.
…Not just returning them to the library, I worked hard to make it so the books automatically return to the shelves too. Hartmut taught me about seventy percent of it, though.
Hartmut said I was being too greedy putting too much into one magic circle. But to me, wanting to be ambitious for the ideal library isn’t a bad thing. Since I was told to consolidate into one magic circle, I packed in as much as I could.
“Now then, Princess, here is a new book.”
After breakfast, while waiting in my room, Richarda placed a book borrowed by Hartmut on the desk with a thud. Filine and I read through it together.
“I wonder what kind of book it is today? Oh, Lady Rosemine, there’s a note tucked inside again.”
According to the high priest’s assignment note that Filine retrieved, a magic circle used in the temple’s ritual magic tool that muffles sound a little can be improved and embroidered to create a highly soundproof carpet.
…This assignment even includes embroidery.
As I sighed at the increasingly difficult assignments from the high priest, Filine encouraged me, saying, “Reading in a quiet environment is wonderful, so let’s do our best.”
Last year, while I was away for the dedication ceremony, Filine had been diligently collecting stories and copying manuscripts at the noble academy. She was quite surprised by how noisy the library became as the final exam approached and more people used it.
“Most visitors to the library were from lower domains, but there was a struggle for reference books and carrels. I felt a bit reluctant to get close.”
As a lower-ranking noble, Filine was on the receiving end if any arrogant nobles pushed her aside. So, when I was away, she would borrow books for copying and promptly return to the dormitory.
“I have a deposit to borrow books from Lady Rosemine, and Judith accompanied me, so it wasn’t too dangerous to carry books. Lower-ranking nobles in the lower domains can’t borrow books to take home and can only study in carrels, so it must be tough.”
