Chapter 97: The Deal Behind the Scenes
When Sect Master Wang heard these words, his heart involuntarily skipped a beat, and he silently braced himself.
Yesterday, after he and the other senior leaders received the notice from Li Feiyu that Han Li would be coming to Sunset Peak at noon the next day, some immediately proposed to take advantage of the meeting to do something underhanded and kill Han Li, citing that he was too dangerous and hard to control.
But this suggestion was vigorously opposed by another group. They believed such an action was too risky, and if it failed, it would provoke a severe backlash from the other side. They thought it best to have a proper discussion with Han Li first before making any decisions.
Those who wanted to strike immediately countered fiercely, arguing that delaying would risk leaks and create more complications with time.
In truth, everyone knew well that calling Han Li too dangerous was just an excuse. In fact, some were scheming to seize Han Li’s cultivation techniques to benefit themselves. Even those opposing immediate action probably harbored similar intentions but preferred a more subtle and covert approach.
The two factions argued heatedly in front of Sect Master Wang, their faces flushed with anger, and no one persuaded the other even as the meeting was about to end. Their quarrels dragged on incessantly.
Finally, the surviving Uncle Senior in gray clothes couldn’t stand it any longer. He coldly said something that immediately quieted everyone.
“If you kill Doctor Han, aren’t you afraid his elders will come after you?” The gray-clothed man’s words were like a bucket of cold water, instantly sobering the feverish senior members.
“Exactly! He’s so young yet so powerful! Surely he has immortal-level elders behind him. If we recklessly kill him, when his elders come looking for revenge, won’t we all be doomed without a burial place?”
Realizing that harming Doctor Han was tantamount to inviting death upon themselves, those who had advocated murderous schemes changed their tune. Even though one or two still clung to greed, the idea of treating Han Li more gently was finally agreed upon.
Now, when Sect Master Wang saw Han Li suddenly say such a meaningful sentence, he naturally felt a little guilty. He suspected Han Li was all-knowing and had somehow learned about the disputes from yesterday, hence the warning.
However, Wang Juechu, as the sect master for many years, was no ordinary man. His depth and experience helped him quickly shake off the influence of the heaven's eye technique, and his expression returned to normal.
“Divine Doctor Han, why would you say such things? Everyone in our sect is deeply grateful to you,” Wang Juechu thought carefully and decided to probe Han Li’s intentions before speaking further.
“But I’ve heard rumors that some people intend to harm me!” Han Li sneered lightly and said calmly.
Sect Master Wang was startled at first but, seeing no sign of anger from Han Li, relaxed a little. Since he did not speak in an angry tone and came alone to meet him, it seemed Han Li had only heard some rumors, not the full details of the meeting. There was still room to mend relations.
“Divine Doctor Han, you may have misunderstood. It is true that some scoundrels tried to be ungrateful yesterday, but rest assured, they have already been arrested and are under strict watch. Most of our people are still grateful to Doctor Han and would never do anything that causes harm to friends or pleasure to enemies,” Wang Juechu said solemnly after weighing the situation.
Han Li inwardly sneered. Since revealing his strength and helping the seven mysteries sect through this crisis, he had constantly reminded himself with the adage “the bird is shot when the bow is no longer needed” and “burning the bridge after crossing the river” to stay cautious. Just because he had done favors for others did not mean they would always be grateful. Human hearts were the hardest to fathom.
