Chapter 366: Owner Gu's Business
Wang Changqing continued, "Mortals like me who live on the various islands must either perform labor or pay spirit stones; otherwise, living on the islands is not permitted. That’s because these islands are protected by magical artifacts set up by immortal masters, so we don’t have to worry about attacks from demonic beasts or the heavenly wind, allowing us mortals to live here in peace. Moreover, immortal masters possess vast magical abilities. When we mortals go on long sea voyages, we usually try to hire one or two immortal cultivators to accompany the ship. That way, if we encounter demonic beasts at sea, we have a chance to survive. Of course, those immortal masters willing to be hired are generally those with relatively free status."
"Heavenly wind?" Han Li’s face showed a flicker of confusion when he heard this term.
He knew about demonic beasts! But this “heavenly wind” was something he had never heard of before.
“Back where you used to cultivate, did you never encounter the heavenly wind?” the old man asked with a strange expression.
“In the place where I used to cultivate, I never saw the heavenly wind! What exactly is it that it could be compared to demonic beasts?” Han Li replied calmly, as if it was no big deal.
Upon hearing Han Li’s words, Wang Changqing felt somewhat doubtful but still obediently explained, “The heavenly wind, demonic beasts, and ghost mist are known as the three great disasters of the Chaotic Star Sea. You already know about demonic beasts; immortal masters surely know far more than I do. Most demonic beasts in the sea have enormous bodies and are skilled in water-elemental sorcery. We mortals have no way to deal with them. Only immortal masters can possibly slay them.”
“The heavenly wind is a hurricane that appears twice a year at one end of the Chaotic Star Sea, steadily blowing to the other end. Wherever it passes, towering waves surge, houses are destroyed, and people perish. If mortals live on islands without magical protection, survival chances are slim. It’s said that even immortal masters who get caught in the heavenly wind find it extremely difficult to escape, and some may be buried there forever.” Wang Changqing’s face showed a hint of fear as he spoke.
“Then what about the ghost mist? What kind of disaster is that?” Han Li asked without changing expression.
It was better to fully understand the three great disasters, so he would be prepared if he ever encountered them!
Hearing Han Li’s question, the old man finally confirmed that this immortal cultivator really knew nothing about the sea and was unaware even of the mysterious ghost mist among the three great disasters. He wondered where this immortal master had been cultivating all along. Could he have come from the mainland? But this was the Chaotic Star Sea; nearby were only other sea regions—no mainland in sight.
Suppressing his odd feelings, Wang Changqing cautiously continued, “The ghost mist is the most terrifying and mysterious of the three great disasters in the Chaotic Star Sea. It is said to be black fog that drifts unpredictably over the sea’s surface. Mortals who see it are doomed to die without fail, and even immortal masters avoid it at all costs. Any living creature enveloped by this mist has never emerged again. Not even immortal masters are exceptions! However, although the mist is formidable, it usually appears only in one location and never approaches larger islands. As long as one avoids it in time, survival is possible. So, despite its fearsome nature, it causes the fewest deaths among the three great disasters.” The old man spoke with a look of relief.
Hearing this, Han Li pondered inwardly.
“What kind of place is this? If that’s the case, my plan to find a small island with spiritual energy and cultivate alone is doomed. If I run into heavenly wind or ghost mist, wouldn’t I die so unfairly?”
Han Li was a little frustrated.
Seeing the displeasure on Han Li’s face after hearing this, the old man became nervous.
