Rizel was leisurely having breakfast with the elderly lady.
The menu was sandwiches, generously filled with shrimp and pickled vegetables tossed in a sweet and sour sauce. There was also salty ham and cheese paired with sweet dried tomatoes.
The freshly baked bread emitted a fragrant aroma, and biting into it, the juices from the fillings soaked into the soft white dough. She chewed on the hearty fillings, savoring and swallowing.
“It’s delicious,” Rizel said.
“Well, I’m glad. Take your time eating,” the elderly lady smiled kindly from the seat a little away, sipping her tea.
She probably had finished her morning chores and was taking a moment to relax. After preparing Rizel’s breakfast, she had brought her own tea and come over.
Maybe she thought eating alone might be lonely. Rizel wondered if she did the same for Jill and Eleven, who were already out. The thought made her smile quietly, wishing she could have seen that scene.
“Where is your master?” Rizel asked.
“He’s at the guild today, giving swordsmanship lessons. He should be back around noon,” the elderly lady replied.
“I see.”
“Is something wrong?”
“I just thought I hadn’t greeted him properly.”
Munching on her sandwich, Rizel bit into the filling-packed bread with ease. At first, she had trouble eating neatly and would freeze whenever the fillings spilled, but now she was quite skilled.
Well, sometimes the amount of filling made it impossible to eat without spilling. Jill and Eleven had told her that was just how it was, so she didn’t worry about it much anymore.
“Oh, come to think of it, have you only properly met the mischievous kids?”
The elderly lady lumped Jill and Eleven together as mischievous — a strong statement.
Rizel nodded, fully understanding. After all, she was the mother of the landlady of the Capital City.
“I’m sorry, they just can’t help but be restless like children.”
“No, it’s fine. We’ll greet him when the time is right.”
“Do you need anything?”
“I’d really like to hear some heroic tales.”
Rizel smiled, and the elderly lady’s eyes softened as she sipped her tea.
It was natural for an adventurer who had not yet reached the upper ranks to be curious about a former rank s adventurer. Unlike the elderly lady who ran the inn, it was easier to ask an old man who proudly reminisced about his adventuring days.
Rizel had no intention of asking about Jill’s meeting. If she was curious, she would ask directly.
“That man doesn’t stop talking once he starts.”
“That’s exactly what I want.”
They exchanged amused smiles, and Rizel swallowed the last bite of her sandwich.
Seeing this, the elderly lady slowly stood up and left the dining room. She returned not long after, carrying freshly brewed tea, which Rizel received gratefully.
They chatted leisurely for a while when suddenly the sound of a small bell rang.
“Oh, who could that be?”
That was the small bell fixed near the door.
The elderly lady left without a hint of hurry, and Rizel watched her go, gazing warmly down at the cup in her hands.
The ceramic cup, beautifully painted in wonderful colors, was a rare item in this area. It resembled something from the eastern country with which Rizel had trade agreements in her former world.
No, its design might even be more exquisite. The elderly lady said it was a gift, and the breadth of her connections was truly worthy of a former rank s adventurer.
“Miss Rizel, you have a visitor,” the elderly lady called.
“Huh?”
Startled, Rizel looked up from her cup.
At the door of the dining room stood the elderly lady smiling warmly. Behind her, a familiar vivid jade color peeked out.
“Long time no see, Rizel,” Jade said.
“Jade-san,” Rizel’s eyes lit up with a smile, and Jade relaxed her usually slightly sullen expression.
“You were in Sars, weren’t you?”
“Lately, yes. I’ve been wandering around here.”
The elderly lady encouraged them to take a walk since the weather was nice, and the two strolled along the waterways, chatting as they went.
